日頃からラジオを聴く人にとって、DJの存在は日常の一部と化している。しかし、彼らはお気に入りのアイドルでも、親しい友達でもない。リスナーは電波に乗って送られる声とそこから紡ぎだされる言葉1つ1つを通してのみ、彼らの人間像を理解するほかない。DJとリスナーの関係は、このように不透明性を残した状態で成り立っているのだ。
そんなリスナーのまだ知らない素顔を1年間追い続けたのが、世界的カメラマン、ハービー・山口。2020年、FMヨコハマの35周年を記念し、ハービーが捉えた計12人のポートレイトが毎月のタイムテーブルの表紙を飾る、特別企画が開催された。
現在ライカそごう横浜店では、撮影された12枚の写真を高品位プリントで展示した「DJたちのポートレイト展〜FMヨコハマの番組を彩る12人の素顔〜」が開催中。
同局にて、自身も「ハービーズレディオ」のDJを担当したという経緯があるハービーの目には、カメラ・ラジオを通じて見える1人1人の日常、ひいては人生の姿は、どのように映っているのだろうか。
・写真を撮るとき、DJとしての彼らか、それとも1人の人間としての彼らか、どちらを写しているのですか？
ズバリ言えば人としてだと思いますよ。例えばミュージシャンとして撮るならステージで歌ってるところを撮ると思うんだけど、演奏中だけでなく彼らの楽屋やコンサート終わりの観光中、飛行機の中とか、そうした中で彼らの立ち振る舞いっていうのを見て、僕なりに共感を得たところにシャッターを切っているから。
DJとしての姿を撮るのであれば、スタジオの中で彼らが真剣にしゃべってる時の顔を撮るのがそれらしいかもしれない。でもそうじゃなくて、横浜の街に連れ出したっていうことは、彼らがどこで育ったとか、かつてミュージシャンのキャリアがあったとか、これから俳優として羽ばたいていくとか、そういった部分を含めて人となりを撮るということだと思いますね。
写真を撮るとき、僕は良い所は何だろうとすごく探そうと思ってますよ。例えばディレクターの書いた原稿をそのまま読むのであれば、彼らの持ってる人柄とかは関係なくて、声だけを売るっていうようなことだってあり得るわけだけど、そうじゃなくてしゃべる内容にはその人が背負ったものが言葉の端々に出るわけですよね。で、その中で彼らの良い所を表情から垣間見る、摘み取る、ピックアップするって言うのかな。
誰もいない劇場のステージを思い浮かべてみて。そこは何も起こってないです。しかし一歩出れば、それは誰もいない劇場とは全く逆で街で常にいろんなことが起こってます。それがもう飽きることはない、自然の中の劇場なんですね、それぞれの人生が交差する劇場。そこにシャッターチャンスがいっぱいあるんです。
DJも、声だけを売り物にするんじゃなくて、いろんなものを全部背負っての彼らですから。その時点で彼らが持ちうる一番素敵な表情が撮りたい！ってことなのかな。
・DJの方とのポートレイトではどのような対話をされたんですか？
絶えず話しかけてます。横浜のどういうところが好きだとか、今度どういう活動されるんですかとか、今何興味あるんですかとか。笑ったり、難しい顔したり、遠く見たりって、そういう中で、ここがこの人らしいって表情を見逃さないようにしてるんですよね。
キザな言い方だけど、僕はその人の明日の幸せを祈ってシャッターを切るって気持ちを絶やさないことが大事だと思ってます。ご自身が「僕はこんな表情するんだ！」って、その写真を見る瞬間に幸せになれたら本望だし、リスナーやファンの方がこの写真を見て、「こんないい笑顔する人だからああいうあったかいトークをされるのか！」って辻褄が合ったら素晴らしいし。そういうとこで役に立てたらいいなと思うね。
・カメラ・ラジオともに、対象との距離を重要とするコミュニケーションツールですが、ご自身でラジオをやられていた際のリスナーとの距離感は、写真を撮る時と通ずるものがありましたか。
瞬時にして出会った人にカメラ向けてその人の良さを引き出すって言うのがカメラで、その感動を喋りによってリスナーに伝えるって言うのがラジオだよね。まあ僕はラジオでたまに番組に出させてもらってると、僕も同じこと考えてた！みたいな、生きるヒントを共有できたと思うよね。
歌手の谷村新司さんが言ってたんですけど、「目に見えるものって言うのは世の中の全部を100とすると、たった10しか見えない」って。写真も見えるものしか映せないし、見えるものしか撮れません。けれど9割の、見えないけど大切なものっていうのを僕はラジオで補ってるのかな。
僕はエッセイも書いていて、本を何冊か出してます。一枚の写真では語りきれないその人の過去・背景を、エッセイやラジオで音楽とともに補填してるんだと思いますね。
・コロナ禍で、ご自身の中で何か変化はありましたか？
特にないんですよ。9月に写真とエッセイの本「Hope2021-変わらない日常と明日への言葉-」が出る予定なんですが、唯一変わったことと言えば、マスクをしている写真が多くなりました。だけどね、マスクをしてるからみんな素敵なのよ、目がイキイキとして。
でね、僕の人生のモットーの一つに、①今しかできないことをする、②自分しかできないことをする、っていうのがあって。この2つをクリアしたら、後悔のない人生を送れると思うんですけど。①は、みんなマスクをしてる写真って今しか取れないですよね、来年コロナが風邪と同じ程度のものになったとしたら、マスクみんな外すよね。だから今は今であるべきものを撮って。②は、僕の場合だと写真。あと、ラジオもこの歳でしかしゃべれなかったと思う。ハタチの時の僕だったら何も喋れないよ。今は台本なくても何でもできるのは、いろんなことして引き出しがいっぱい増えたから。だから今、エッセイでもラジオでも淀みなくしゃべれているんだと思ってます。
インタビューを通じて感じたハービー・山口の温かな優しさは、彼が捉えた被写体の笑顔にもあふれ出ている。先行きの見えない暗い毎日が1年以上続く中で、彼の写真たちは、すさんだ心を柔らかく包み込む光となって、私たちを元気づけてくれることだろう。
7月31日には、ライカ横浜そごう店での展示を記念して、YouTube Liveによるオンライントークイベント「ライカM10モノクロームとDJたちのポートレイト」が開催される。今回の企画で被写体にもなっている、放送作家・脚本家の小山薫堂をゲストに迎え、ライカについて語りつくす予定だ。是非こちらも展覧会とセットでチェックしていただきたい。

写真家・エッセイスト。1950年、東京生まれ。大学卒業後に渡英し、ロンドンに10年以上滞在。帰国後は、福山雅治、エレカシ、布袋寅泰ら国内アーティストとの写真集、CDジャケット、作詞などを手がける。大阪芸大、九州産業大学客員教授。

For those who listen to the radio on a daily basis, the presence of radio DJs has become a part of everyday life, but they are neither their favorite idols nor their close friends. Listeners have no choice but to understand their human image only through the voices sent on the radio waves and the words produced by them. The relationship between DJ and listener is established with such opacity.
Herbie Yamaguchi, a world-famous cameraman, has been capturing DJs for a year which listeners don’t know on a personal level. In 2020, in commemoration of FM Yokohama’s 35th anniversary, a special project was held in which a total of 12 portraits captured by Harbie were on the cover of a booklet called FM Yokohama’s Monthly Timetables.
At present, at the Leica store in Sogo Yokohama, “Portrait exhibition of DJs-The real faces of 12 people who color FM Yokohama’s program-“ is being held, which displays those 12 photographs taken in high-quality prints.
In the eyes of Herbie, who has overseen the radio as a DJ in “Herbie’s Radio” at the same station, how are each person’s daily life and, by extension, their life, reflected through cameras and radio?
・When you shoot the portraits, which one do you focus on the person as a DJ, or as that person?
Let’s cut to the chase, I capture their images as human beings on film.
When I have a chance to take a picture of musicians, you may imagine that I only shoot the photo on the stage, but I also push the shutter when I sympathize with their appearance, in their dressing room, in the city where their concert is held, and on the plane.
In the case of radio DJs, if you want their photo as a radio DJ, you will shoot the photo of them talking in the studio. However, I think that we should focus on their personality deeply, for example, their hometowns, careers, and dreams.
My attention point of taking portraits is to find their good perspectives. Suppose that they only read scripts directors describe in their radio programs, it doesn’t matter what they are. They can use their “voice” as a tool, but that’s not everything. Those bits and pieces in the flow of what they say reflects how they live. Every word from their tongues expresses their lives. I always catch them through their expressions.
Imagine the stage where no one is here. Nothing happens there, but you go out, it’s a completely opposite street to an empty theater, and things are always happening. It is exactly not a man-made theater, but it is a theater where each life intersects, where I want to press the shutter button.
The same is true of radio DJs. They don’t just sell their voices, they also carry all kinds of things on their backs through their lives. I want to take the most wonderful expressions they can have at that point.
・What kind of topics did you talk about during shooting time?
I was constantly talking to them. For example, what do you like about Yokohama, what kind of activities are you going to do next, and what are you interested in now…etc. I always make efforts not to miss their expression that reflects themselves.
Not to sound cheesy, but the important thing is to keep the mind of hoping for their happiness while looking into a viewfinder.
It would be great if they could be happy when they saw the photo, like “I look like this!”, or their listeners and fans saw this photo and said, ” What a nice smile! That’s why his talk is so heartwarming !” I hope my photo will be useful in such a moment.
・You also had a radio program at FM Yokohama in 2020. I understand that both camera and radio is a communication tool that share similar importance of distance in some ways, how is it between your listeners and taking portraits for you?
The camera is to bring out their good points instantly. The radio is to convey such an emotion to listeners by talking. When I appear on the radio occasionally, listeners give me tips like “I was thinking about the same thing!”, it’s a tip that makes me feel alive.
Shinji Tanimura, a Japanese musician once said, “Assuming that the whole world is 100%, only 10% can be seen.”.
Photos can also be pictured with only things that can be seen and we can shoot things which can only be seen through us. On the radio, I compensate for the remaining 90% of what is invisible but important. Additionally, I write essays and have published some books. Through that, I can add the subjects’ stories and background which my photo couldn’t tell enough.
・During COVID-19 pandemic, has anything changed in your career?
Nothing in particular. In September, I am going to publish a book containing essays and pictures, “Hope 2021- Unchanging everyday life and words for tomorrow-”, and the only change is that in my portraits most people are wearing masks, but they are so beautiful because we can read their faces via their eyes which peek from the top of the mask.
One of the mottos in my life is (1) Do what I can do in this present, and (2) Do what only “I” can do. If you clear these two things, I think you can live a life without regrets. For (1), you can take a picture of everyone wearing masks only now, and if the pandemic ends, all the masks will disappear in the cities. (2) In my case it’s taking pictures. Also, I think I was able to talk on the radio because I was this age. I can’t have said anything if I was 20 years old. Now I can do without a script because I have so many drawers filled with stories. So now I think I am able to speak without stagnation on the essay or on the radio.
The warm kindness of Herbie Yamaguchi that we felt through this interview is overflowing with the smile of the subject he captured in his photos. Although the dark and uncertain days continue for more than a year, his photographs will be a light that softly envelops the sullen heart and can cheer us up.

Photographer / essayist. Born in Tokyo in 1950. He went to England after graduating from college and stayed in London for over 10 years. After returning to Japan, he worked on photo books, CD jackets, lyrics, etc. with domestic artists such as Masaharu Fukuyama, Elephant Kashimashi, and Tomoyasu Hotei. He is a visiting professor at Osaka University of Arts and Kyushu Sangyo University.
