人生の意味を探究する物語「アステロイド・シティー」ウェス・アンダーソン最新作
9月1日(金)より日本公開となるウェス・アンダーソン最新作「アステロイドシティー」。ウェス・アンダーソンの世界観を覗く
時は1955年。舞台はアリゾナやニューメキシコを思わせるアメリカ南西部にある架空の小さな街。ここで行われるジュニア宇宙科学大会の祭典に参加する少年少女とその家族たちが集結したその時に、誰も予期しなかった国を揺るがす大事件が起こる。
今回の原案は、これまでもウェス•アンダーソンとのコラボレーションを数多く手がけてきたロマン•コッポラとの共作となる。物語では時は同じくして２つの異なる舞台が交差する。タイトルのアステロイドシティーで起こる物語はそのうちの１つであり、時折現れるモノクロなシーンとの関係性や意味については実際に映画を見て明らかしてほしい。
広大な砂漠地帯にぽつんと存在する小さな街アステロイドシティーでのシーン、まるでジオラマのような造り物っぽさがあえて残るセットがウェスらしくポップだ。ヴィム•ヴェンダースが昔から好きだというウェス。今回のアメリカ南西部の風景を造るに当たってもドイツ人の彼のレンズを通したアメリカの風景写真から影響を受けたという。フィルムで撮影された写真のようなレトロなカラーの映像は、まさに少し焼けた古い写真を見ているよう。舞台はダイナー、ガソリンスタンド、モーテル、天文台くらいの田舎街だが、たびたび登場するモーテルの自販機が斬新で面白い。不動産や弾薬なども売っている風変わりな自動販売機が立ち並ぶ中、なんと完璧なマティーニを作るマシーンが（それもちゃんとマティーニグラスに）。大事件により町が封鎖されてしまったことで思わぬ足止めを食らった受賞者の親たちがそこに集ってマティーニを飲みながら「いつまでこの町にいなくちゃいけないのか」とぼやきつつ時間をやり過ごす。不本意でありながらも、それなりに楽んでいるように見えてしまう。ウェスの代名詞とも言える緻密にデザインされたセット、左右対称の構図などとともに奇抜なアイデアや独特のユーモアが随所に散りばめられていて、ウェスらしさを象徴するこだわりが細部に詰まっている。

50年代が舞台になったのはウェス史上初ということで、当時の流行を反映した登場人物のルックにも注目したい。戦場カメラマンである主人公のオーギー（ジェイソン•シュワルツマン）のファッションは、彼とって制服のような存在であるベーシックなカラーのサファリジャケットとスーツパンツ。常にカメラをぶら下げてパイプを咥える姿が男らしい。マリリン•モンローを彷彿させるキャラクター、ミッジ（スカーレット•ヨハンソン）と教師ジューン（マヤ•ホーク）の50年代らしい膝の隠れるワンピーススタイルは、清楚で上品かつウェスのカラーパレットであるパステルカラーとの相性も抜群だ。ウェスの映画の中では制服姿のキャラクターが数多く登場する。グリフ将軍（ジェフリー•ライト）やヒッケンルーパー博士(ティルダ•スウィントン)をはじめとして、几帳面に着こなされた制服に身を包むキャラクターたちは大人も子供もどこかほほえましい。

ウェスならではのパステルカラーの映像やバックグラウンドに流れる軽快なカントリーミュージックとは対照的に、喪失感や不安を心に抱えている主人公のオーギー。ストーリーを通して自分の感情が何を意味しているのか、誰もが一度は考える人生の意味に向き合う物語。「人生の意味についての詩的な瞑想」とも言われているこの映画は、観る人や、その時のムードによっても受け取り方が変わってくるかもしれない。ウェス自身もこの映画について語っているように、２度は観てみる価値がありそうだ。

Wooly took a peek into the World of Wes Anderson and his latest film Asteroid City, which premiers in Japan on September 1.
The year is 1955 and the story is set in an imaginary small town in Southwestern America which resembles the areas such as Arizona and New Mexico. When the young boys and girls gather with their families for a Junior Stargazer event, an unpredictable and world-changing incident occurs…
The story of Wes’ new film was co-written with Roman Coppola, who he has worked with many times in the past. In the film we follow two stories that merge together: one unfolding at Asteroid City, and the other story appearing as sporadic monochrome scenes throughout. Just how the two stories relate to each other is for you to understand as you see the film yourself.
The visual scene of the small town of Asteroid city in the middle of a vast desert area feels almost like a diorama, a scene artificially created, with a very Wes-like and pop vibe. Wes has expressed being a long-time fan of Wim Wenders, and in creating this American Southwest scenery, he found inspiration for the landscape by depicting it as if seen through the lens of Wenders’ German perspective. The retro-colored scenes look as if taken straight out of a film camera, like an old photo that has been bleached by the sun over time.

As Wes’ first work set in the 1950s, the look of each character, which all reflect the trends of that time, deserves its own mention. The protagonist and war photographer Augie (Jason Schwartzman) wears his basic safari jacket and suit pants like it’s his uniform. His masculine look is complemented by the camera always hanging around his neck and the pipe in his mouth. Midge (Scarlett Johansson), who resembles the golden girl of the 50’s Marylin Monroe, and teacher June (Maya Hawke) both wear the typical 50’s dress that goes below the knees. This neat and classy style matches perfectly with the film’s pastel colors, and the color palette we imagine when thinking of Wes Anderson. Furthermore, several characters in the film are dressed in uniforms, such as General Gibson (Jeffery Wright) and Dr. Hickenlooper (Tilda Swinton), and their neat looks are sure to charm both adults and children viewers.

In contrast to the Wes-like pastel color scenery and the cheerful country music, the protagonist Augie’s mind is troubled by a sense of loss and worry. Through the unfolding story, we are confronted with the thoughts that everyone has at least once – “what do my emotions actually mean” and “what is the meaning of life?” As other viewers have mentioned, this film is like “a poetic meditation about the meaning of life” and depending on the viewer and their mood, how they perceive the film will also differ. To repeat what Wes himself has said about this movie, it is one that is worth watching twice.
