日常にある人工的な光に写し出されるオブジェクトやシーンを撮る現代美術作家・土田祐介氏の個展が、2019 年 2 月 23 日(土)~ 3 月 6 日(木)にかけて、福岡市中央区赤坂のギャラリー「WHITE SPACE ONE」にて開催されている。
深いところに、直接突き刺さってくるような彼の作品の魅力を探るべくインタビューを敢行。
夜の闇に浮かび上がる街灯を撮った「night works」、高速道路の橋脚からわずかに覗く灯りを撮った「polaris」、構造物の細部を宇宙と繋げた「apollo」、様々な画面の光に青白く照らされた現代人を撮る「display」。
彼が写し出す日常にある人工的な光と影。 それなのになぜか異次元を見ているような不思議な感覚が残るのは、現代を生きる私たちにとってあまりにも近く現実的なものがゆえに見えなかった存在に、彼の作品を通して改めて気付くからなのだろう。
福岡の地で初めて個展を行う心情を教えてください。
初めて作品をみていただくことは、嬉しい反面とても緊張しています。
日常にある光を少しでも印象的な光に視点を変えられたらと願っています。
福岡で個展を開くきっかけ、土田さんと福岡の繋がり教えてください。
福岡には学生時代に出会った友人がいます。彼とは東京のアートイベントで数年前に偶然再会しました。
東京と福岡で活動場所が異なりますが、それからアートや地域について情報共有したりと関係が続いています。
人工的な光と影が印象的な作品ですが、土田さんがこの作品たちを通して今伝えたいことを教えてください。
日常にはたくさんの光があります。 イルミネーションの光だけでなく、高速道路や路地裏にある街灯、 テレビやケータイの画面の光も視点を変えてみると、用途とは別に印象的な光景を演出しています。
視点の角度を少し変えることで、まったく異なる景色や視点、価値観を生むことがあるとお伝えできればと思います。
そして、個展と同時開催されている FUKUOKA ASHIA ART WEEK the finders 2019 でも 全国の新鋭若手写真家が集う公募写真展「24HOURS IN HEISEI」にて彼の写す世界を感じることができる。 審査員賞である【石渡健文】賞を受賞した彼の写真は福岡の地に新たな光を生む。
公募展のテーマである「宇宙・自然・人」とどのように向き合って作品を製作しましたか。
テーマ「人」を選び、平成時代の「人」をこの時代の光で撮影する、をコンセプトに撮影しました。
PCやケータイ画面の光に照らされた「人」とその画面の先に繋がっている関係が表現できるように作りました。
福岡とアートの関係が今後どのように発展していって欲しいと思われますか。
福岡とアジア諸国との連携と、九州の各地の伝統文化をアートの視点で発信していって欲しいです。
「日常」を改めて可視化することで、 受け取る側の深いところに語りかける力が彼の作品の魅力ではないだろうか。 ぜひ、福岡の地で多くの人に彼が生み出す世界観を直接感じていただきたい。

Yusuke Tsuchida, a modern artist who capture objects and scenery under the artificial lightings in our daily lives, holds a solo exhibition at WHITE SPACE ONE in Fukuoka, from 23rd February to 6th March. Wooly interviewed him to explores his aesthetics piercing us deeply.
“Night works” captures streetlights in a dark night, “Polaris” shows lightings from a gap between piers of highways, “Apollo” is connecting details of objects with the universe and “Display” takes modern people delighted by blue lights on various screens.
He only portrays artificial light and shadow in the daily lives. Though, his works leave us a strange feeling as if looking into a different dimension because they remind us something too ordinally to us living in the modern life.
Would you tell me your feelings to have a solo exhibition for the first time in Fukuoka?
It’s very exciting and nervous at the same time that someone look my works for the first time.
I hope I can change the light in our life to more impressive thing.
What was the start of holding the exhibition here and what is your connection with Fukuoka?
I have a friend in Fukuoka that I met in school and happened to meet him again at an art event in Tokyo a few years ago.
We’re based in different places, Tokyo and Fukuoka, but I keep in touch with him since then to exchange information about art or communities.
What do you want to express through the works of artificial light and shadow now?
There are very different kinds of lightings in our daily lives. Not only illuminations, but the streetlights on highways or paths and the blue-lights on TVs or phones also create impressive scenes if you look from a different perspective.
My purpose it to tell that by changing a viewpoint, you sometimes can find other aesthetics and values.
Along with the solo exhibition, you can feel the world created by him at the publicly sponsored exhibition “24 HOURS IN HEISEI” during FUKUOKA ASHIA ART WEEK the finders 2019. He won an award given by a judging committee, Takefumi Ishiwatari, and has brought the new lights to Fukoka.
How did you create your works according to the theme of this exhibition “Universe, nature and human beings”?
I chose “human beings” as a theme and took photos with the concept of capturing people of Heisei era under the light of this era. I tried to express people in front of the lights of screens and relationships they have through those screens.
What would you expect regarding to the development of art in Fukuoka in the future?
I want Fukuoka to cooperate with other Asian countries and deliver traditional cultures in Kyushu area by using art.
Visualizing everyday affairs, his works fascinate us and have power to tell stories to us deeply. It is the best opportunity to experience his world in Fukuoka.
