Wooly vol.23カバーストーリーを撮影したEmily Ashcroftが初のフォトブックを発売！
ニックナイト氏に師事した経験を持つ、実力派のイギリス人ガールズフォトグラファー、Emily Ashcroft。
2015年から2017年の間に撮りためた6人のTokyo Girlsが登場する待望の一冊。今月30日には、イギリス・マンチェスターでローンチパーティーを開催。
自然体なTokyo Girlsは、楽しく美しい思い出とともにやってくる。今回は、東京への愛がとまらないエミリーにショートインタビューを敢行！
-自己紹介をお願い！
私は、イギリスでファッションとポートレートをメインに撮影するフォトグラファーよ。
10年以上女の子たちを撮り続けて、今回私の初の写真集となる‘Tokyo Girls’をリリースしたの！
-はじめに、写真集について教えて！
来日して初めの頃、WoolyMagazineで仕事をしたの。Wooly23号の表紙を撮って以来、来日中は数多くのテストシューティングを撮るようになったわ。東京に住んでいるブライトな若い女性を撮りためていきたかったから。
そのあと何度か旅行していたんだけど、そのときに撮りためていた写真を ‘ Tokyo Girls’にまとめてみることにしたの。
-どうして東京の女の子を選んだの？
日本は、私にとって特別な場所。若い頃から東京に魅力を感じてから、今は年に数回東京を訪れようと決めているわ。東京は、写真を愛する人の楽園。そこにはたくさんのフォトブックストア、山のようにあるファッションマガジン、そしていまだに多くのものが印刷されている場所がある。ユニークな場所に、行くことでインスパイアを受けないことのほうが不可能なくらい。
私が日本で撮影した写真は、いつも私のお気に入りになるし、それは私にとって特別なもの。だから写真集の形にするのが、なによりも最適だと思ったわ。
-写真集の中に、6人の女の子が登場するよね！どうやって出会ったの？
SNSで出会ったの！女の子の一人、Hazukiは私が初めて一緒に仕事をしたモデルだったから、この本に彼女がいることはとても重要なことだったわ。
女の子たちは東京に住んでいて仕事をしている若い女性たちだった。一人は、原宿のヴィンテージストアで働いていたし、もう一人の女の子はテクノロジー系の仕事をしていたわ。私たちは、お互いオンラインでメッセージをやりとりして、様々な場所で集まり、一緒に出かけて写真を撮ったわ。
本当にマイガールたちを撮影できて楽しかった！
-作品を見た時、リアルな東京の女の子を感じた。どのようにモデルや場所を選んだの？
撮影する前に、コーヒーショップで会って、お互いのことを少し知るように心がけたの。女の子たちがどんなことに興味を持っているのかを知ることが好きだったのね。彼女たちの本来の個性をそこに取り入れたかったから、一緒に場所とスタイリングを選ぶようにしたわ。ファッションストーリーを作るということよりむしろ、東京に住むリアルな女の子像であるTokyo Girlsを捉えたかったの。
-撮影をしている時、いつもどのようなことを考えている？
私は、モデルが撮影中、心地よくいられるようにディレクションするのが好き。だから、撮影前に会ったり、遊んだりすることが重要。そうすることで、彼女たちとささやかなる友情が芽生える。モデルのことをより理解することができるの。たとえば、彼女がシャイ/控えめ、または おしゃべり/行動的だった場合、彼女の人格をどうすれば写真によりよく表すことができるかを考えるのが好きなの。
-撮影中に、印象的だったことは？
東京で彼女たち全員と写真を撮れたことは何よりも嬉しかったし、とっても新しい撮影の経験になったわ。私は、どうしたらフランクに彼女たちとアプローチできるかというのを学ばなくちゃいけなかったし、それは実際私にとってとても楽しい挑戦になった！彼女たちは、みんなとてもかっこよくて優しかったから、すぐに楽しい撮影をクリエイションすることができたわ！
Natsumi(カバーガール)とは、彼女のアパートで会ったんだけど、彼女はとっても素敵だったな！一緒になって彼女のワードロープを全て彼女のベッドに広げて、服をそこから選び、六本木の街に繰り出したのは本当に楽しい時間になった！
私は、いつも外で撮影をすることが好きなの。スタジオだとインスピレーションを得るのに苦しむから。
だから、東京のストリートは私にとってすごくワクワクさせる場所だわ！
-今度はあなたのことを教えて！普段自由な時間は何をしているの？
多くの時間をボーイフレンドと過ごしているわ。彼もフォトグラファーなの！
普段は、インスピレーション求めて探したり、たくさんのムードボードを作ったりして、新しい撮影の計画を立ててるわ。それと、最近は日本語の勉強もしていて、いつも次の東京へ行くプランが頭の中にあるわ！
-お気に入りのフォトグラファー・アーティストはいる？
もうたくさん！Hiromixかな！彼女は、私の大好きな日本人のフォトグラファーの一人で、唯一無二の東京ガール！
それと、ティム・ウォーカー、パメラ・ハンソン、ヴァレリー・フィリップスも好き！
-もし日本に次くるとしたら、何をしたい？
毎年、日本に行ってるくらい、本当に世界でお気に入りの場所なの。次は東京ね！Tokyo Girlsに出てくるみんなと会いたいな！ほとんどみんな私の親友だから、東京でブックの発売をしてみんなでお祝いしたい！

Emily Ashcroft is a talented British female photographer with experience studying under Nick Knight.
The first book features six Tokyo Girls between 2015 and 2017 through the neighbourhoods around Tokyo.
A launch party will be held in Manchester, England on the 30th of this month.
All natural girls come with bright and beautiful memories.
Wooly have a short interview with Emily who can’t stop loving for Tokyo!
-Could you tell us about yourself?
I’m a fashion and portrait photographer from England. I’ve been photographing girls for over 10 years and I have just released my first photobook, Tokyo Girls.
-First, could you tell us about your first photo book?
On one of my earlier visits to Japan I was working on a feature for Wooly Magazine. The following year I shot the cover of Wooly Vol.23 and began booking numerous test shoots in during my trips.
I really wanted to document the bright, young female inhabitants of Tokyo and several trips later I decided to compile them all into a book, Tokyo Girls.
−Why did you choose Tokyo girls?
Japan is a very special place to me, I’ve been attracted to it since I was young and now I prioritise visiting Tokyo several times a year. Tokyo is a photo lovers paradise, so many photo bookstores, piles of fashion magazines, so much stuff is still being printed. Exploring all the unique neighbourhoods, it’s impossible not to feel inspired. The photographs I take in Japan are always my favourites, they’re very special to me – and what perfect way to preserve your favourite photographs than a photobook!
-In your photo books, there are 6 girls. How do you meet them?
I met most of the girls through SNS. One of the girls, Hazuki, was the first model I met and worked with in Tokyo so it was important for me to include her in my book. The girls are young women who live and work in Tokyo, some are models, one girl works in a Harajuku vintage store and another girl works in Technology. We messaged each other online, met up in various neighbourhoods of Tokyo and went out and took pictures together, i really enjoyed shooting all of my girls.

-I get a genuine feeling of real Tokyo Girls when I view your work, how do you choose your models and locations?
We meet in coffee shops prior to shooting and get to know each other a little, I like to find out what interests the girls have. We choose the locations and styling together because I want to bring out their true personalities, I wanted Tokyo girls to be a collection of portraits of real girls living in Tokyo, rather than creating fashion stories.
– While taking pictures, what do you usually think about?
I like to direct my models in a way where they can be comfortable, that’s why meeting up and hanging out before the shoot is so important, because once i’ve established a small friendship with them, i will be able to understand my model more, for example if she’s shy/reserved or loud/confident, i like to know how we can translate their personality into a good photo.
-What was your impression during shooting?
I loved photographing all the girls in Tokyo, it felt like a very new shooting experience. I had to learn how to direct in broken Japanese, which was actually a fun challenge for me! They are all so cool and kind, we were able to create so really fun images together.
I met Natsumi (The cover girl) at her apartment and she was super sweet, we had fun throwing all her wardrobe onto her bed and picking outfits together and spent the night wandering the streets of Roppongi together. I always prefer to shoot on location, i struggle to feel inspired in studios – so they streets of Tokyo are super exciting for me.
-We would like to know about yourself. What do you usually do in your free time?
I spend a lot of time with my boyfriend – he’s a photographer too. I’m usually planning new photoshoots by searching for inspiration and creating many moodboards. I’m also currently studying Japanese language and I’m always planning my next trip to Tokyo!
-Do you have a favorite photographer or Artist?
So many! Hiromix! She is one of my favourite Japanese photographers, the original Tokyo Girl.
Also Tim Walker, Pamela Hanson, Valerie Phillips..
-What is next plan you would like to do, if you come to Japan?
I visit Japan every year, it’s my favourite place in the world. Next time I’m in Tokyo, I would like to meet up with all the girls who appear in Tokyo Girls and celebrate together with a Tokyo book launch, as many of them have become my close friends.
-Do you have a message for Wooly’s readers?
