甘く、ファンシー。だけどどこかソウルフル。観る人に”ギャップ”を感じさせるイラストを多く描くさくらいはじめさん。さくらいはじめエキシビジョン『POP ART SOUL』が福岡・TAGSTAにて開催中。男女問わずドキドキさせちゃう彼にインタビューを敢行。
作品を作るようになったきっかけは？
もともと60年代のファッションや音楽、カルチャーが好きでイラストレーターとして活動し始めたのは10年くらい前で。仕事とは関係なく趣味としてやってたものが反映されています。
今回の作品の女の子たちはみんな舌を出しているところがとても印象的ですが理由などありますか？
ただ女の子が舌出してるのってエロいなって。笑
今回の作品は絵自体、結構露出高めでだけど観たときの印象ってエロさよりも可愛さの方が強いと思うんです。それで今回は舌を出すことと女の子同士にすることでエロさを二割り増しにしてみました。
さくらいさんの作品はマンガのようなタッチが魅力的ですね。
最近はマンガやコミック系の作風に近いかもしれないです。でも、僕自身はそういう感覚は持っていなくて。インスタグラムなどでコミック系の方から反応を頂くことで感じる部分はありますね。根底に可愛いが好きっていうのが反映されていると思います。
さくらいさんのイラストは60年代のファッションやカルチャーが流行りつつあるティーンエイジャーに刺さるものがあります！
本当ですか？？そう言っていただけると未来が感じられます！（笑）
影響を受けたアーティストなどいらっしゃいますか？
すごくいるけど、子供の頃鳥山明さんのマンガが好きで鳥山さんのイラストのタッチとか真似していました。今とはダイレクトには繋がってないけれど根底にはあって。そこから60〜70年代のファッションやカルチャーに興味を持って、いざイラストを描こうと思ったときに自然と出てきちゃってるところはあります。
描くことに対して意識されていることなどありますか？
元々今回の作風であるエロいイラストは描いてなくて、どっちかといったらファッションイラストっぽいものを描いてて。自分で言うのはなんやけど、そういう絵ってオシャレが過ぎてくるなって（笑）。
オシャレにオシャレを重ねていくのはつまらないなって思ったから「〜なんやけどオシャレやな」っていう二面性が絵的にオシャレやなってなるほうが面白いんじゃないかなって。それで今回は「エロいんやけどオシャレやな」というコンセプトで描きました。

京都工芸繊維大学大学院修了。イラストレーター/グラフィックデザイナーとして、広告・ポスター・雑誌・レコードジャケットなどのアートワークを手がける。音楽・ファッション・映画など60年代文化への造詣が深く”POP ART SOUL”と掲げた主題のもとスクエアな探求とヒップなパフォーマンスで古くて新しい創作に取り組む。
Sweet, fancy and soulful. Hajime Sakurai’s illustrations give various impression to people. The exhibition of him, “POP ART SOUL” is held at TAGSTA in Fukuoka. Wooly interviewed him exciting boys and girls.
Why did you start illustration?
I love the 60s fashion, music and culture and started to work as an illustrator about 10 years ago, based on my hobby work.
Is there a reason for that the girls in works stick out their tongues?
I just think a girl sticking out her tongue is sexually attractive. The illustration itself is more cute than erotic, while the girls reveal their skin. So I wanted to add 20% eroticism by drawing the girls and their tongues.
Your works are impressive with a comical drawing.
These days they look like manga or comics, but I don’t intend to do that. I can tell that though because I sometimes receive reactions from comic writes as well. Basically it reflects the fact that I like something cute.
The 60s fashion and culture is popular among teenagers now, so they must like your illustrations!
Oh really, it’s good for my future then! haha
Do you have any artists you’ve been influenced by?
If I have to pick one, I was obsessed with the comic by Akira Toriyama and imitated his works. It doesn’t directly connect with mine now, but it’s still a base. Then I got interested in the 60s to 70s culture, and when I started the illustration it comes out naturally.
What are you careful about when drawing?
I didn’t draw a bit erotic one like this before, but more like a fashion illustration. I gradually think it’s too much fashionable if I can say, haha. I think it’s boring to make it more fashionable, so I came up with the idea there should be two sides of fashion and something else at the same time. This time I had a concept that “erotic and fashionable” then.

He has a profound knowledge of the art,music,fashion in the 60s, and with the theme “POP ART SOUL” he shows edgy and hip performance witch is new and traditional at the same time.
