Would you tell me the process until this exhibition?
I held an exhibition at CALM & PUNK GALLERY in Nishi-Azabu five years ago, and at the same time I was introduced on Gas Book vol.28. That exhibition called ‘PUDDLE’ was initially started when I worked on with the theme that is the scenery reflected on the surface of a puddle, which can be described, in the other words, as that you can see a different appearance or a world in a water like a fantasy film. I found my general theme as I created my works for a while, which is ‘visualization of invisible things’, seen in the works this time. Then I had been working on new art works, had opportunities to exhibit in London and Berlin, and made a zine. When I started to think about showing my works within this theme in Tokyo again, I wanted to have an exhibition at the more spacious gallery. I have been a fan of TOLOT for long and talked to them for one and a half year until this time.

Is there anything different when you created art works for the bigger exhibition?
Of course it took more time and budget to create the bigger and many more works. At the time it’s confirmed to exhibit at TOLOT, I came up with the idea that audiences walk through the first, the second and the third room, and I had to consider what I can do in each rooms and make it happened. Because the three-dimensional objects were so huge that I couldn’t create all by myself, I sometimes had to order to some outside creators. There were also some things that didn’t end up in the exhibition. For example I made about 200 graphic art works, and of them I narrowed it down to some of the graphic canvases to exhibit, while some other ones you can see in the videos played at the exhibition (ii. The window of space).

Why did you get interested in the theme ‘visualization of invisible things’?
The first trigger was a ray of light or a visible ray. We can see real objects, for example a silver chair or the shape like a four-sided table, thanks to the visible rays of light. But there’re many other rays in the air such as infrared rays or X-rays which can see something that human beings can’t. Like that, it is said that we can see something outside of our reality or different colors or shapes with the ray that exists in this universe. I wanted to try to put into definition that the world that we are seeing at this moment, is actually not it all, there is more to it.

Is the reason you use different media of two or three dimensions in order to visualize the information of what you wanted to express?
Definitely, with a theme of the room i, ‘a recording of lights’, this room shows the lights installed and then showed, or installed, recorded, extracted and sent, and it is difficult to express all these processes on a plain surface. So I introduced a pillar to install the lights or a scanner, and a rolled paper to extract. I also created some works with the materials which can be brought to the space. Especially the work called ‘Future Nature disc –dedicated to voyager records’ is very iconic. There used to be ‘voyager’ which they put record discs in a satellite and launched it into the space, so I made it as an homage.

Then, is this the flow that you input in the room i, output in the room ii, and embody all in the room iii?
Yeah, after both inputting and outputting, in the room iii ‘beyond the memory’, it is unsure whether it is released or … It is more like floating, and the audiences can experience themselves.

Did you rebuild the concept ‘the scenery never seen before’ based on the general ideas you’ve acquired before? Or is it from when you tried to throw them away?
I didn’t try to throw away the general ideas. The wellspring of my inspiration or my experience can be found in the 14-minute work in the room iii. It is not over after 14 minutes, but this time is just a part of something, or for some people it seems only a minute. It is rather something to step in a bit than the art work.

From where do you get the inspiration?
I think everything I see is my inspiration. Especially listening to music is one of the important things for me. I like any kinds of music. Maria Teriaeva, a girl artist whom I asked to come to the reception party from Russia, plays experimental music, and I buy vinyls of that kind of music. I prefer off-beat ones these days.

The music of cassette tape sold here is also very impressive.
This is the music from the room iii, by my buddy of a DJ unit called YATT I’m originally associate with. It also consists the sound of water or a scanner. All the works such as graphics are started with scanning the materials such as photos of scenery or the copies of books. Sometimes I went fat to take pictures, and sometimes I had to hold a stone to be scanned. As this, I make a music track with a collage of recordings in many fields.

Finally, would you tell me your perspective of future?
I could finish one set of works within the theme and the way this time, I’d like to continue this series on a record book of this exhibition that I’m thinking to publish now. I don’t want it to be something that makes the audiences feel they wanted to visit this exhibition, but that makes them feel the same as when see it. I also think about taking on a field trip again. In regards to designing works, I’ll continue to create and try something new.
