Yasuka:

Riku:

Yasuka:

Riku:

Riku:

At the art space called UNION SODA in Fukuoka, two stylists from the same generation Lee Yasuka and RIKU OSHIMA held the exhibition ‘SHINKA’. Takumi Kitamura from a dance-rock band DISH// specially shot Takuma Fujie for this exhibition.

New creators’ progresses (=SHINKA) never stop!

Why did you start to get interested in fashion?

Lee Yasuka: I gradually started to have interests from when I was an elementary school kid because of my mother. At first I just said I didn’t like this or that, and my mom chose what I wear as she wanted. But now I can find that I have a same kind of taste as her.

RIKU OSHIMA: For me, I began to think about fashion when I read a mode magazine called “gap PRESS“ at my cousin’s house when I was a junior high school student. Then I looked for something related to fashion and got interested in fashion stylists. I knew that a designer is not my job, but instead I wanted to express through the clothes which different people made. That was when I was in a high school.

From then did you really think about becoming a stylist?

RIKU: Yeah, I was a bit edgey at that time and I wanted to choose a different route from otheres, so I decideded to go abroad. I entered London College of Fashion in the UK. In reality, however, there were only rich and weired people in the school, and I myself stopped going to the school. One day, I had a chance to go to a Paris Collection. It was a time of many fashion bloggers, so there were rows for the bloggers at the collection shows, which can’t be seen now. I remember that Bryan Boy sat on the front row. Seeing them, I thought that was the best and the most clever way to get involved in fashion, and I started to take street snaps and showed them on my blog. I’ve got a job by doing so before. So in short, it was better for me to go outside and experience many things than to learn in the school.

When do you find a value of being a stylist?

Yasuka: When I could work with my favorite people. It is fun and a kind of embarassing at the same time when my friends ask me to work together.

RIKU: I like it most when I go to Paris twice a year. I visit there during the term of men’s fashion week, and it becomes like a school report that I can learn a lesson by working in Paris. I work for a brand called FACETASM and I really appreciate its designer Mr. Ochiai, who offers me a chance to learn just like in Paris. I’ve seen the backstage of the actual scene from when I started to work, so I want to return profits I’ve acquired to the brand someday. Such kind of things make me very excited!

Who do you want to work with?

Yasuka: Ummm I’d say Mrs. Dewi!

RIKU: Wow you choose a niche one.

Yasuka: As a woman, it’s nice and I admire that she’s always caring about her belongings and that she has a strong opinion. It would be my pleasure if I can work with her. How about you, Riku?

RIKU: I can’t choose one… but for foreigners I’d choose Blood Orange from London. For Japanese, Keisuke Kuwata of the band called Southern All Stars. The only effect of my father is this band, so I would thank him by doing so.

How do you describe your styling with three words?

Yasuka: “Funny”. I want to make a style that people can laugh when seeing it. Before thinking about cool or cute, I want everyone to feel that fashion is free and fun. It’s difficult to choose three though!

RIKU: I’d say “color”, “thorny” and “deviance”. I want to make not only something neutral or beautiful, but something weeded out. It can be something I like or I get effected by, and I always think I don’t have to get evaluated from everyone.
Especially I care about color. I recently try to combine the items with different patterns or shapes based on the same color. It’s like connecting dots and very interesting.

Who do you respect?
Yasuka: Everyone around me is different and I respect them, but I don’t have anyone especially to mention.

RIKU: I respect all my friends who spend time with me. It’s only my friends who can turn off my switch while I’m not working, and thanks to them I can work effectively as work.

What is your future goals?

Yasuka: In a coming year, I’d like to work more for magazines.

RIKU: This is my third year as a stylist, so I’ll just keep my pace and add a bit more. This is like whether I can hold the sand in my hands or not, and I’ll try to catch a bigger thing in the future.
