Interview with it-photographer Valerie Phillips
ー2006年以来の七年ぶり、二度目の日本ですが、日本はValerieさんから見て変わりましたか？
七年前に来た時にとにかく日本を大好きになり、それ以来また来日したいとずっと思っていました。その時は二つも撮影が重なりとても忙しく、今のように知り合いが今回の来日の時のようにあまりいなかったです。しかし色んな素敵な場所に連れて行ってくれたりして、他では見れない場所にも行けました。
Q. 今回の来日ではたくさんのコラボレーション（Little Sunny BiteのYoppyさんとラフォーレ原宿でポップアップショップ、Vacantで展示会とTokyo Art Book FairでMarginal Pressでのサイン会）をしていますが、このようなコラボレーションは全てどのように実現させましたか？
Little Sunny Biteの場合はYoppyが私に連絡してくれて、それからSNSで連絡をとってコラボレーションをすることになりました。彼女のブランドはとてもユニークで可愛いので大好きで、そのようなブランドからコラボレーションのオファーがきたことはとても嬉しかったです。Vacantはいつもクールな企画をたくさんしていて一緒にお仕事をしたいなと思っていました。Marginal Pressのユミコさんとは昔からの気が合う知り合いで今回のコラボレーションに至りました。
ー東京の印象はどうですか？
東京の大好きな所はみんなが自分を表現するのを恐れず、それがファッションやスタイルにでているからです。私が出身のニューヨークではみんな少しつまらなく、固すぎるので私にはあまり合わないです。東京はロンドンのように例え青い髪の毛でも火星から来たとしても他人のことを気にしない、自由な人々だと思います。そのため、世界中で一番東京とロンドンのクリエイティブな人々に私はインスパイアされます。
ーロンドンで写真家になろうと決心したのですか？
元々イギリス音楽が大好きでバンドを撮影したくてニューヨークからイギリスに行ったことが始まりです。バンドを撮影しているとコンサートに無料で行けたりして、そこから本格的に始めました。固い仕事ではなく、自分だけのスタイルを見いだしながらzineなどを作るアーティストになりたかったのです。
ーValerieさんの被写体は主に女の子ですが、それには理由がありますか？
男子より女子の方がクールだから！それしか言うことがない！
ー女の子であることの最大の長所は何だと思いますか？
女の子は髪の毛や服装が上手くいかなくても自分自身に自信を持って生きていけると思います。もしかしたら男の子の方が潔癖で自信を持っていないかもしれないと思います。そのため、男の子を撮影するとありのままの自分を出さないからあまり楽しくない時があります。もちろん、例外はいますけど、基本的に女の子は最高です！
ーモデルはどのように選ぶのですか？
モデル事務所から飛行機の中からカフェまであらゆる場所から見つけ出します。最初の写真集のモデルのMonicaはニューヨークのハロウィンのパレードで合いました。惹かれる何かを持った人がいて、連絡をとって、中身を知って、その人をどんどん撮影したくなります。
ーValerieさんのモデルになる人のタイプはありますか？
直感だけで選ぶので、タイプはないです。どんなに大勢の中でもモデルにしたい魅力的な人はすぐ見つけられて、「あの人を撮影しなきゃ」と思います。
ー最新の写真集「hi you’re beautiful and how are you」でもこれまでにもArvida Bystromさんとは何度もコラボレーションをされていますよね。Vice Magazineを通して知り合ったと聞きましたが、一緒にお仕事するまでの経緯を教えていただけますか？
当時のストックホルムのVice Magzineの編集者で私の親友のMilene Larssonが私とArvidaが絶対お互いの事を好きになると思い、会う機会を設けてくれました。Arvidaが作った「Lick, Fuck, Luck」という作品を見せてくれた瞬間に大好きになり、この子に今すぐ会わなきゃと思いました。実際、その晩にSkypeで連絡をとって、ロンドンに招待しました。連休にもうすぐ取り壊しになる私の彼の兄弟の家で撮影をしました。数日一緒に撮影してとても楽しかったです。
ー最初のコラボレーションから二年半が経っていますね。今でも彼女を撮り続けているValerieさんから見たArvidaさんの魅力は何ですか？
彼女はとにかく頭がよくて才能があります。男女同権主義や政治、環境問題にとても関心がある子です。私が関心のある話題とは違うので、彼女から学ぶことが多いです。彼女も私から何か学んでいるといいな！二人でいるといつも楽しく、また彼女は時々謎なのでそれもまた魅力で大好きです。
ーValerieさんは人生で何を一番大切にしていますか？ 何に問題を感じていますか？
私はアートを作ることと友人といること、そして世界中の人々が精一杯楽しく過ごしているかどうかが一番大切です。現在の世の中では全ては規制されていてアートを作るのがどんどん難しくなっています。特に広告業界でなぜもっと個性がないのかに疑問を感じています。同じような作品ばかりで好きではないですね。
ー撮影中にArvidaさんとこのような話題について話しますか？
はい、時々します。面白いことに写真集にも書いていることがあって、Arvidaと撮影中に話していると撮影に集中して答えに集中出来ないこと多々あるので、そういう時はカフェに行ってゆっくり二人で色んなことについて話します。
ー最新の写真集ではArvidaさんのことは長い間撮影されていたのですか？髪色が何度も変化しているので撮影期間が気になりました！彼女が自分の髪の毛を染めている写真はありますか？
彼女は何週間に一回のペースで髪色を変えていますよ。週末だけの撮影だと思いきや、二年をかけて撮影したものだったり、髪色は本当によく変えています。最新の写真集には彼女が髪色を変えている写真がたくさん載っていますよ。
ーValerieさんは髪色をよく変えますか？
私は友人が染めてくれます。何週間か前に青にし、その前は金髪にピンクか青が入っていました。中学生の頃から髪色はよく変えています。
ー最新の写真集、「hi you’re beautiful and how are you」の中で一番お気に入りの写真はどれですか？
一番お気に入りの写真はArvidaが全身ピンクの洋服で流しに横になっている写真です。彼女を撮った中で一番最初の方の写真でした。そして何より彼女がピンクが大好き、私もピンクが大好き、私のトレーナーと彼女のジャージを着て、出来たあの写真が一番好きです。
ー今後の予定や目標などはありますか？
まずは写真集をたくさん出す予定です。ちょうど二週間前にロスからロンドンに女の子を一緒に写真集を作るために招待しました。彼女をInstagramで見つけた瞬間にビビっとくるもがあって、会ったこともないのに招待しちゃいました。空港で止められ、結局一晩しか出れなかったので私のお家で一晩中彼女の写真を撮りました。この写真集を次の作品として出す予定です。あと、zineを今後二年の間にたくさん出します。
ー日本にはたくさんのファンがいますが、次の来日は決まっていますか？
日本にたくさんファンがいることは本当に嬉しいですし、圧倒されます。日本のような文化が大好きな国で人気のアーティストになることは夢です。ベタかもしれないですが、桜の季節にぜひ行きたいです！必ず半年以内にまた日本に行きたいです！
ーThis is your second time in Japan since 2006 and it’s been seven years. Has Japan changed in your eyes?
I remember that I loved it. I loved it so much when I first came that I’ve always wanted to come back since then. But back then I was doing two shoots back-to-back and it was crazy hectic and I didn’t know as many people as I do now. Everyone’s been so hospitable and taken us out to amazing places, incredible things I’ve not seen otherwise.
ーYou’re doing a lot of collaborations this time in Japan (with Yoppy from Little Sunny Bite at Laforet Harajuku, an exhibition at Vacant, and a book signing by Marginal Press at the Tokyo Art Book Fair), how and why did you decide to do all these collaborations?
Yoppy from Little Sunny Bite came to me by contacting me and we’ve been chatting on SNS. I just love her brand, and I thought it was really nice to be asked to collaborate with such a unique and cute brand. It’s also something I’ve never done before. With Vacant, I’ve wanted to collaborate with them because they do great stuff and with Marginal Press, I’ve known Yumiko for a while and we work really well together.
ーWhat is your impression of Tokyo?
What I really love about Tokyo is that people are not afraid to be individually dressed in their own style, kind of celebrate their own personality. Where I’m from in New York, it’s a bit boring and straight and conservative. That doesn’t really suit me. Tokyo is a bit more like London, people just do their thing and it’s fine, no one cares if I have blue hair or is from Mars. They are all creative and really inspiring. To me, I don’t find anywhere that is as near as inspiring as Tokyo or London.
ーDid you decide to become a photographer in London?
I went from New York to London wanting to photograph bands because I loved British music and that was how I started. Photographing bands was a good way to get into shows for free and I just went on from there. I don’t ever want to have a real job and I always wanted to be an artist, figure out my style, and make zines and screen prints.
ーYour photos are mainly girls. Do you have a reason?
It’s because girls are so much cooler than boys! That’s all I have to say but they’re just so much cooler!
ーWhat do you think is the best thing about being a girl?
I think that girls just have the confidence to be themselves and even if they’re having a bad hair day, they still can say, “fuck it” and “who cares”. I think boys are a little more concerned and conservative and it’s harder for them to be themselves and be amazing and make mistakes. So when I’m photographing boys, it’s not as exciting because they’re not as much of themselves. Of course there’s a few exceptions, but mostly, girls rock.
ーHow do you decide on your models?
I find them anywhere from a model agency, on an airplane, or even in a café. I met the model of my first book, Monica at a Halloween parade in New York. They could be models or just people that I meet I am very intrigued about, or someone’s look that I’m very interested in and I get to know their personality and then I become more fascinated and I document it.
ーWhat do you look into a person to become your model?
It’s just an instinct. Never say a type because it’s just an instinct. There are certain people I’m drawn to and fascinated by. I’ll see someone in a crowd and think, “I’ve got to photograph that person!”.
ーYou’ve collaborated many times with Arvida Bystrom, including your latest photo book, “hi you’re beautiful and how are you”. I heard you got to know her through Vice Magazine. How did this lead to your first collaboration?
One of my best friends Milene Larsson, who was the editor at Vice in Stockholm, set Arvida and I to meet each other because she thought that these two people will definitely like each other. She showed me a self portrait that Arvida had made, saying “Lick, Fuck, Luck” and I instantly fell in love with it, that I thought “Where is this this girl because I need to fly her to London right this second!” I skyped her that evening and flew her to London. I invited her to London for a long weekend and we shot in my boyfriend’s brother’s house that was about to be gut. We spent a few days hanging out, taking photos and it was really fun.
ーYou’ve been taking her photo for two and a half years now. What do you find in Arvida that is appealing and attractive?
She is extremely smart, incredibly intelligent and very intellectual. She is also very into feminism, gender issues, politics and cultural and nature issues. They are all very interesting but different to what I’m interested in so I learn a lot from her and hopefully she’s learned something from me too. It’s nice to be with her too, because she is calming even though I find her difficult to know. So we always have a lovely time with each other and a special bond, but in a way I think she is a complete mystery and I think that’s really nice and I love that.
ーWhat do you think is most important in life? What are your issues in life?
I care most about making art and being with friends and making sure that everyone is having a good time in the world as they can. I think trying to be able to make art in this world is getting more and more difficult because everything is more safe and sanitized. I’m sick of everything being so constrained and boring. I don’t understand why everyone isn’t more individual especially in commercial work. I don’t like the homogenized, sanitized, everyone copying each other work. Those are my issues.
ーDo you talk about these topics with Arvida while you shoot?
Yes, I sometimes do. It’s funny because I wrote something very similar in the text of the photo book, that when I’m chatting with Arvida sometimes, I can’t concentrate on the answers because I’m taking photos and so we go to a café and then have a conversation together.
ーDid you shoot Arvida for a long period of time? In “hi you’re beautiful and how are you”, her hair color changes several times so I wondered how long you photographed her. Are there any photos of her dying her hair?
She changes her hair color all the time, like every couple of weeks. It could have been a weekend but it was actually over two years. There are loads and loads of photos of her dying her hair in the photo book.
ーWhat about your hair? Do you change it a lot?
My friend dyes my hair for me. I just got my hair dyed blue a few weeks ago and before that it was blond with pink underneath or blue underneath. I’ve been doing that since I was a teenager.
ーWhat is your favorite photo in “hi you’re beautiful and how are you”?
My favorite photo is the one where Arvida is wearing all pink (pink tracksuit and trainers) and she’s lying on the sink. It’s one of the first photos I took of her. She loves pink, I love pink, they’re my trainers, her tracksuit and we combined them together to make that photo, which I liked.
ーWhat are your future plans or goals?
I have a lot of book projects. Two weeks ago, I flew this girl from Los Angeles to London to do a photo book together. She is an amazing girl but I had never met her and found her on Instagram and freaked out and I knew the instant I saw her that I had to do a book with her. I flew her to London but she got stopped at the airport and eventually only allowed to come out for one night. We went to my house and stayed up all night taking photos and I’m probably going to publish this as my next book. I also have a lot of zines coming out in the next one to two years.
