Based in Singapore and with an avant-garde visual, the independent magazine “WERK” is a well-known name in the magazine industry. Ever since the launching of WERK in 2000 with Theseus Chan as the art director, he has come up with unusual ideas in the print and binding process that surpassed any earlier used methods. Theseus Chan is a person who continues to overwhelm the magazine industry. WERK’s sister-magazine “W_ _ K W_ _ K” (Usually called; WakuWaku) will release their first issue in mid-February this year with Japan as their main market . With the first issue of “W_ _ K W_ _ K” the focus will lie on the Japanese fashion brand “ANREALAGE” and Yoshiyuki Okuyama as photographer. We interviewed Theseus, who’s lately been the centre of attention, about these two magazines that he is working on.

ーIn the media you’ve gotten a lot of attention for using a special printing process for W__K W__K that you also used for the sister magazine, WERK MAGAZINE. What was the original inspiration for using this process?

It is our mission to introduce something new with every issue of WERK. W_ _K W_ _K is no different, by way of thinking and creating.
This time, I want to question the notion of random pagination and combination, where every book is collated and combined differently but yet telling the same story in a myriad of ways. Hence, the sequencing will not be the same for every book.
And for some time, I wanted to have control over how each book is bound together without using the mechanical process. I am very happy to discover a way in which the binding method is exactly what I was looking for – handmade, with a fair degree of uncertainty and a good margin of randomness and individuality.
In this inaugural issue, there is also an element of surprise where electronic parts are embedded secretly. This is a nod to Kunihiko Morinaga’s use of technology in his work.

ーWhat is the biggest difference between WERK MAGAZINE and the new magazine W__K W__K?

WERK magazine is funded by my company WORK. It is independent financially and creatively – a labour of hard work, belief and love.
W_ _K W_ _K is a new approach where we collaborate with like-minded partners who support, accept and share our way of thinking and creativity. PARCO and ASHU NAKANISHIYA are supporting us in many ways besides promotion, funding and marketing.
W_ _K W_ _K is also a crowd-funding project, which is something really new to me.

ーWhat are your reasons when choosing with whom you want to work with? For example, why did you decided to work with ANREALAGE and photographer Mr. Okuyama for this issue?

ANREALAGE and photographer Mr. Okuyama were introduced to me when I visited their exhibition in PARCO Shibuya. The collections and work on display were so impressive and meaningful as they were conceived with new ideas, concepts and experimentation. The work was really powerful. I am fortunate to be able to work together in this manner with W_ _K W_ _K where I am part of a ‘power trio’.

ーFor this number you collaborate with ANREALAGE, a brand that comes up with a new strong concept for every season? How did you choose to show your collaboration in the magazine?

Just as it is ANREALAGE’s mission to find the strong and the new, my mission mirrors that too. It is about having those qualities in our work.

ーWhat are the differences between Japan and Singapore’s creative scene?

I feel the differences are getting narrower now. Singaporean creators today are very well connected with the world.
They have the opportunities and access to education and a stable country and have the affluence to pursue their dreams.
There are many in this new generation, who are making that change in Singapore.

ーFinally, please give a message for your donators at crowd funding!

The BOOSTER project is an unchartered territory for me. Your support will encourage us in this endeavor. My team and I have put in much effort to create something totally unique. I hope you will not be disappointed. Thank you so much and see you in Tokyo soon!!

→Through Cloudfounding, we are currently looking for readers to support us as we work towards publishing the new issue!
