LondonはTeddingtonで結成されたイギリスのバンド Jungle Doctors。高校の同級生でバンドを始めたという5人。イギリスでもまだまだ知名度は低いが、2012年にEPをリリースしてから、BBC Radio 6でTom Robinsonに選曲されるなど、徐々に注目を集めている。秀逸なバンドが多く生まれるイギリスで、どのようにバンド活動をし、曲を作り、どんな夢を持つのか。まだまだ聞き足りないが、インタビューの一部を紹介。
ーJungle Doctorsはどのような経緯で結成したのでしょう？
Angus: 僕らみんなサウスウェストロンドンのTeddingtonにあるセカンダリースクールに通っていて知り合ったんだ。僕とWillは昼休みに音楽室でてきとうに暇つぶしをしてて、そこに徐々に一人一人加わったんです。
ーJungle Doctorsをいつか日本で観るのを楽しみにしていますが、ロックフェスや観客のリアクションなど、日本の音楽シーンについて聞いたことはありますか？どんな印象を持ちますか？
Sam: ファンがすごく熱心で、みんな音楽全般すごく好きって聞いた。もちろん日本に行ってプレイしたいよ！（言いたいことわかるよね…？）
ーいまのUKのロックシーンについてはどう感じますか？競争は激しいですか？
David:うん、競争はすごく激しい 。全身全霊で、オリジナルの音を作らないといけない。ほかにも良いバンドがいっぱいいるからね。
Louis: 多くのバンドがそうしてると思うけど、本当の意味で他と差をつけないといけないし、 けど基本的に僕らはただ僕らのしてることをただ楽しんでやっているかな。そのときはそのときだよ。
ーニューシングルのコンセプトは何ですか？
Band: 新曲の‘Can You See It’はすごくサイケデリック。シンセサイザーを前より使ってみたよ。より駆られた感じでリフベースになってる。ちょっと違ったサウンドで試してみたかったんだ。僕らの普段のものとは少し違ったから、曲作りとレコーディングはほんとに楽しかった。
ーバンドとしてだけでなく、私生活での次なる目標をお聞きしたいです。
Sam: 大学を卒業して、バンドがどこまでいけるかみてみたい！
Angus: スーパーモデルになること。パリでのYves Saint Laurentのショーは続けたい。バンドではもっとファンを増やして、ツアーでアメリカを回りたい、もちろん日本もね。
David: 僕は曲作りを続けて、音楽で生活していきたい。理想的にはこのバンドを通して。
Will: 個人的には音楽業界でイラストレーターやグラフィックデザイナーになりたいな。
Louis: 大学を卒業して、バンドをしながらロンドンにすみ続けたい。もしそうじゃなければ、フィルム製作系のスタジオで仕事をしたいかな。
Jungle Doctors were formed in 2012 by five friends in Teddington, London. Following the release of their first EP in July 2012, the band soon picked up attention from blogs and radio. In England the land where many fantastic bands are born, how do they perform in the scene, make music, and what kind of music do they have. It’s not enough to fully understand them, but we’ll show you a part of the interview.
ーFirst of all, do you mind explaining how the Jungle Doctors
came to form?
Angus: We all went to the same secondary school in Teddington
in South West London and so knew of each other. Me and Will
were messing around at lunch times in the music rooms and one
by one the others joined in.
ーI’m looking forward to seeing the Jungle Doctors performing
one day in Japan.Have you ever heard of music scene in Japan,
such as the rock festivals or the audience’s reaction? What do
you think of Japan?
Sam: We heard the fans were pretty devoted and they’re really
into their music in general. We’d love to come over and play
there soon!
Hint…hint…
ーHow do you feel about the current UK rock scene? Is
it competitive?
David: Yes, very competitive. You really have to knuckle down
and write music that is original, as there are loads of other good
bands out there.
Louis: I think there’s so many bands trying to make it that yeah
you have to really stand out, but in general I think we are just
trying to have fun doing what we do really and if it happens then
it happens.
ーWhat is the concept of the new single?
Band: ‘Can You See It’ is quite psychedelic. We started to use
more synth keys. It’s more driven and riff based. We wanted to
experiment with some slightly different sounds. It was really fun
to write and record because it was a bit different to our normal
stuff.
ーWhat is your next goal not only as a band but also in your
own life?
Sam: Get through uni and see where the band takes us!
Angus: Become a super model and continue doing Yves Saint
Laurent shows in Paris. Also to continue gaining more fans and
doing a tour around America (and of course Japan).
David: I just want to continue writing and make a living off
music, ideally through the band.
Will: Personally, I’d like to be an illustrator/ graphic designer
within the music industry.
Louis: I wanna get through uni then I’d love to stay living in
London doing the band, if not then I’d probably just try and get
a job in some sort of film editing studio.
