0frは90年代にオープンしたパリの一番有名なアートブックストアの一つだが、東京にあるお店はパリのオリジナル店とはちょっと違っています。0fr TokyoはK-NARF(Frank Le Petit)というフランス人の男性からの始まり、現在は彼と日本人のマリさんが一緒に0frTokyoを運営しています。K-NARFに開店の経緯を聞くとK-NARFはこう説明してくれました。「エキシビションのために前に日本に来たことがあるんだけど、その時は４～５ヶ月のアーティスト・イン・レジデンスで日本に来て、ここから１００メートルのアパートに住んでいたんだ。パリの０ｆｒのオーナー、アレクスはパリで僕の作品を商っている人。パリの0frにはよく日本人のお客さんが来てくれるから、日本でアートギャラリーかアートブックストアとのコラボのこと聞いたら連絡してねって言われたんだ。そこで、前にここでカフェを長い間にやっていた、何回かすでに会ったことのあるマリさんに会いに行ったんだ。彼女は新しいカフェが多くなったから最近のカフェ事業はまあまあって言ってたんだよね。それで、マリさんにアイデアがあると言って、すぐパリの０ｆｒのアレクスに連絡したんだ。それからアレクスから『K-NARFだったら是非やって欲しい、でも僕が知らない人が東京で０frをやるのはちょっと嫌だな。』っていう返事があって、一ヵ月半後にはカフェ付の0fr Tokyoを開いてたね。」
0fr Tokyoは金〜日、10時〜22時だけ営業している。週3日しか開いていない理由は、開いていない4日間にお店はK-NARFのアートスタジオになるから。K-NARFによると、「１５年間に専任アーティストを務めていて、ブックストアとかカフェも一度もやった経験がなかったからこのプロジェクトは僕にはちょっと難しかったと思ってたんだ。それで僕が中目黒は平日にすごく静かだから、金〜日だけに営業するアイデアを考え出したんです。だから今は、月〜木に僕は店を自分のアートが作れる場所として使っていて、マリさんもそのときは自分のプロジェクトをしてるんだ。」
お店自体以外は、ビルの少し裏側にギャラリーとして使われている畳の部屋で、毎月新しいアーティストが個展を開いています。店の中にはK-NARFの作品が飾られています。
パリの0frの手伝いとK-NARFが前から知っていた東京にいるアーティストで、最初の0frのアートブックのセレクトがされた。すぐに東京に0frができた噂が広がって、小さな出版社やアーティストが店に作品を見せに来るそうです。K-NARFはいつも新しいアートブックを探しているが、出来れば会ったことあるかこれから会えるアーティストのアートブックの方がいいと話していました。実際に会ったら、アーティストや作品のことをもっと理解できるからです。そんな、彼によるアートブックの選定や冊数が、パリの本店との2つの店の多くの一つの違いで、カフェがあるのもOfr Tokyoだけに限られています。約18年間営業しているパリの0frのオーナー、アレクスとマリー兄弟をよく知っているから、２つのお店に違うところが多くても、K-NARFは本店と同じように、誰かの家にいるみたいな感じの店を作っていきたいとのこと。
K-NARFに、この記事を読んでいる方に0fr Tokyoに来た方が聞くとこんな返事を返してくれました。
「すごくいいコーヒーがあるから！（笑）いいや、この店は東京や東京の外にもないお店だから。僕はパリの0frみたいな面白い店を世界中にどこにも見たことないけど、よく知っている店だからこそ0fr Tokyoができる自信を持っているんだ。パリの0frの雰囲気を少しだけでも味わえることがここで出来る事に意味があると思う。だから是非皆も来てほしいです！」
中目黒に位置する0fr Tokyoは、アートに興味のある人はもちろん、美味しい珈琲の飲めるお店を探してる人に是非訪れて欲しいお店です。
0fr is one of the most well-known art book stores in Paris that has been along ever since the 90’s, but the store in Tokyo is not a copy of the mother-store. It all began with the French artist K-NARF(Frank Le Petit) who now is the one running the project together with his companion Mari. “I have been in Tokyo for exhibitions before, but then I came to Tokyo for a 4-5 months Art Residency and I rented an apartment just 100 m away from here. Alex, the owner of 0fr in Paris is also the one dealing with my artworks in France. He had told me that since they have a lot of Japanese costumers, if I heard anything about a collaboration with a bookstore or an art gallery, to let him know. I had met Mari, who’d been running the café here for a long time, a few times before. When I came here to visit her she told me that with all the new cafés the business was going so-so. I told her that I had an idea and then contacted Alex at 0fr in Paris. He told me ‘If it is you running it K-NARF than yes, I don’t want someone I don’t know running 0fr in Tokyo.’ A month and a half later, in May 2014, we opened 0fr in Tokyo as a bookstore with a café.’ explains K-NARF.
0fr Tokyo is only opened Fri-Sun 10am-10pm. he reason for it being opened three days a week is that the rest of the days it is used as Frank’s studio. “It was a bit tricky for me since I’ve been a full-time artist for 15 years and never run a bookstore or café before. Then I came with the idea of it only being opened Fri-Sun because Naka-Meguro is superquiet during the weekdays anyway. So during Mon-Thurs I use this place to do my work as an artist and she can work with her own projects.” Apart from the store they have a tatami-room gallery at the back of the building where there will be a new artist every month exhibiting their artwork. In the store itself you can also admire some of K-NARF’s own photo-artwork.
With a little help from 0fr in Paris and the artists K-NARF already knew in Tokyo, he started the selection of art-books in the store. Soon the rumor of that 0fr had opened in Tokyo spread and people from small publishing companies and artist came to show their books. Frank is always looking for new books but explains that he prefer to have books of artist he has or can meet so he can get a better understanding of the artist and their work.The selection of books is one of the many differences between the stores in Tokyo and Paris as is the café that is limited to the Tokyo store. 0fr in Paris has been along for about 18 years and Frank knows the owners, the siblings Alex and Marie. He says that just like their store, he wants to create the feeling of being in someone’s home.
When I ask K-NARF why people should come by 0fr Tokyo Frank answers; “Because we have great coffe, haha! No but because this is different from any other place you can find, both in Tokyo and outside. I have never seen a shop like 0fr Paris anywhere, it is so interesting, and since I know it so well that’s why I think I can do 0fr here in Tokyo. Then if I can duplicate the spirit here even just a little bit then it’s worth it and that’s the reason why you should come here!”
0fr Tokyo is a must-visit for all art-interested or anyone looking for a nice place to grab a great cup of coffee.
