  • Industry+ is an international interial design company with PC Ee from Singapore in lead of the design and production. He established the company last year together with the producer Nakamuta , from Japan. Their newest exhibition ‘Asian New Faces’ was held in Daikanyama, Tokyo, in November and Wooly went there to get an interview with the head designer.

Q: What is something that you try to keep in mind while you’re making the designs?

I think that design is such a broad perspective, and individually, we all see design in a different way, but for Industry+ it’s more about how you feel and how you connect with the idea and the design as well. Not so much about the end product, but the thought process of the individuals. We always look for pieces that reflect your emotions, but at the same time, it also is very important to be creative in how to be innovative in terms of materials and production. It’s a combination about self-expression, within the world of production in order for everyone else to enjoy what you’ve done.

Q: How did you end up holding your exhibition, Asian New Faces, here in Daikanyama?

Well we just finished a show in Paris, followed by London, and we wanted to have a show in Japan. Since we are so young, we wanted to have a smaller space where there was less risk of investment, but still garnered a lot of traffic, to see what peoples reaction in Tokyo are. That being said, I think we got perfect location, so we thought we would give it a try and if it turns out well we will try for a bigger space next year.

Q: What is the concept of Asian New Faces?

Industry+ is showing collections which involve craft, contemporary designs and innovative manufacturing processes. At the same time industry plus is also about being “made in Asia”. We are trying to promote Asian designers, keep the entire design process, conception to production, in the Asiatic region. From where in Asia we don’t have any particular preferences but we would like to explore other parts that have talented designers that we could collaborate with. Since there’s such a rich culture all over Asia as long as the person is talented in creative we will want to do collaborations.

Q: What do you think of Japanese art, design, and culture?

First, it’s very experimental. Most of the Japanese creative personnel are individuals. They are very expressive. They don’t hold back. When you’re free to express your mind gets going, and they can really show who they are as designers. The other thing is they are clever. They are clever in interpretations and also in surprising us with their designs. Finally it’s innovative. Innovative interpretations. All this together forms Japanese design today. To me, it’s very exciting

Q: Do you see a lot of inspiration from the Singapore culture in the designs and tell us some good things about Singapore?

Yes, yes of course, but I think when we look back in history, the inspirations are much stronger. How you put that in a contemporary culture today, I think that’s the challenge. Singapore is a young country, it’s only 49 years old but the culture comes from all over South East Asia. It’s a quite interesting mix from Malaysian culture, Indonesia, India the Philippines, even Korea and Japan. It’s really a melting pot. Everyone speaks English, so communication wise it’s international. I think the best part is just this, our multicultural origins. With so many different races and cultures we have a lot to draw from. For example with so many different cuisines it’s a food heaven. but apart from that, in Singapore, there’s a lot of quirks and a lot of quirkiness in terms of language and dialects in everyday communication. With an Asian city together with English communication and a 100% IT based society it’s a futuristic kind of a city and I think it’s influencing many international young people at the moment. Compared to Japan, Singapore is like a whole other world.
