California-born, 17 year old mix mix media artist Abby Phillips. We conducted an interview and collaberation with this multi-genre artist, going as far as to have her work as a current contributer to Wooly WAVE. An active and talented creative mind, Interview with Abby Phillips.

ーHow do feel the web media (like Instagram)? Do you use in order to increase your efficiency?
We are a generation who primarily uses social media to express ourselves. Some of us, have even built careers using social networks and the internet. In fact, we’re the only generation so far who has been able to achieve this.
I’ve been sharing my art through social media since I was in 8th grade. Social media, specifically Instagram, is where and how I built my fan base/following. I believe that social media is a fantastic way to share artwork and gain exposure.

ーHow did you get started making the creation?
I’ve always been creating art ever since I was little. It wasn’t until somewhere in middle school where I began creating mixed media, illustration on photos. That began around middle school. I remember discovering Nick Knight and really wanting to take photos like he did. Since I really wasn’t able to, having a sappy little camera, a white wall, and an iPod, I decided to incorporate a new medium to my photos, illustration! I knew my photos would remain bland if I didn’t do anything about it.

ーHow has your background influenced your work?
My background/youth involved me constantly moving and being exposed to different aspects of nature and climates. I was born on an Air Force base in Japan. From there I moved to Portugal, then Hawaii, Alaska and now California. My adventures in all of these countries and states have helped me grow and become more closer to nature! I feel that these aspects are frequently exhibited in my work.

ーHow would you categorize your works?
I call my pieces mixed media, which really is a combination of photography and illustration. But, I feel my work best fits in the broadest of categories, art.

ーWhere does the inspiration from your illustrations come from?
I try to find inspiration in everything I observe. Not necessarily the painting itself, but the strokes and color used in it and the ideology behind the piece. I use little bits of art I discover, whether the piece was intentionally art or not, and apply it to my work.

ーAny future plans or goals?
Nothing particularly. My overall goal is just to create art and be proud of it.
