夏のドイツのツアーはいかがでしたか？ 何か思い出があれば教えてください。
素晴らしかったよ！
5日間ほぼ毎晩ライブがあって終わったらすぐ帰るっていうカツカツのスケジュールだったけどね。
ベルリンはずっと最高だったし、今回は最後に小さい町でも演奏したんだ。
直射日光のあたるところですごく暑かったから、水着を着て演奏しなくちゃいけなかったよ（笑）
アルバム『Romaplasm』について、共通する部分もありながら、曲調や歌詞のモチーフ等、バラエティに富んでいると感じました。
曲順はどのように決めたのでしょうか。
違う世界についての挿絵みたいに、それぞれ異なる想像上の出来事を描いているんだ。
とても忙しくてかみ砕くのが大変なアルバムだから、できるだけ自然な流れになるように、曲順に関してはベストを尽くしたよ。
シンセを打楽器的に、スタッカートを効かせて用いているのが印象的です。この音作りはどのように行いましたか？
DAWはAbleton Liveで、シンセに関してはReaktorを多く使ったよ。
とにかくディケイタイムとリリースタイムを短くして、パーカッシブな音になるように心がけたね。
リードトラックのYeomanはどのトラックにも部分的にフックとなるようなパートがあり、
それぞれが互いを邪魔せず有機的に曲を構成しているように感じます。
特に声の重ね方が印象的でした。この曲の製作について特別意識したことがあれば教えてください。

この曲に関しては飛行船が出てくるアニメや映画など、色んなものからインスピレーションを受けているよ。
そういうインスピレーションに対するロマンチックなオマージュみたいなものなんだ。
ハウルの動く城、エウレカセブン、ファイナルファンタジーVIII, 他にもいろんな作品の要素が入っているよ。
「Adam Copies」はエヴァンゲリオンについて書かれています。
「ひとつになれ、自我の境界を超え」は人類補完計画のことを指しているのだと思いました。歌詞は誰の視点で描かれているのでしょうか？
視点、という意味では碇シンジなんだけど脚色も含まれているね。
ストレスであったり力であったり、理不尽な感情だったり、シンジ君がエヴァを操縦するときに感じるもの全部が曲になった — そんな感じかな。
またこの曲では最後に叫んでいるパートがあるのも印象的です。
このパートはボーカルを録るときに偶発的に出てきたものですか、それとも作曲の最初の段階で考えていたものでしょうか？
実はあの部分は予め入念に考えていたんだ！録音は基本的に自分の部屋でやっているから、アパートではあんな風に叫んだりはできなくて。
朝の6～7時頃だったと思う、友達の練習スタジオを借りて、他のバンドが使う前に録らせてもらったんだ。
だいたいそんな感じだね（笑）
ユーモラスな「Out」のMVがとても好きです。出演されているJohn Wiesenfeldはあなたの兄弟ですか？
他のキャストや、撮影時のエピソードについても教えてもらえると嬉しいです。
そう、ジョンは僕の兄弟だよ。
キャストはただ友達に声をかけただけなんだけど、撮影のプランを書く必要があって。失敗なく1日で撮り終える必要があったから色々大変だったね。
特に化粧にはミスって使っちゃった分も含めて100ドル近くかけてしまったのをよく覚えてる。
撮影ディレクターを務めているマリオは『Romaplasm』のジャケット写真も撮ってくれているよ。
あなたの部屋の中でBroadback(ボディビルダーのような筋骨隆々のたくましい男性)のポスターが貼ってあるのも印象的でした。
アルバムの曲名にもありますが、Broadbackはあなたにとってどんな対象なのでしょうか。
はは、あれはよく見るとわかるんだけどポスターじゃなくて服のプリントなんだ。
BLの漫画家/イラストレーターの児雷也先生をフィーチャーしてるMassive-Goodsのものだよ。”Broadback”は曲の中では語り手が恋人である戦士につけたニックネームを意味しているよ。基本的には筋骨隆々のたくましい男性って意味だね。
Geotic(別名義のプロジェクト)の新曲がとても好きでした！
10/17にリリースされるアルバムはどんなものになっていますか？
ありがとう!! Geoticのアルバムは日本ではTugboat Recordsから10/17にリリースされるんだ。
東京でのGeoticの公演は初めて新しいライブセットで演奏することになるし、これ以上ないぐらいワクワクしているよ。
最近のお気に入りを教えてください。
アルバムだとBlawanの”Wet Will Always Dry”、Adrianne Lenkerの”Abysskiss”、Amnesia Scannerの“Another Life”、Chastityの“Death Lust”……。
アニメだと思いつく限りでは『鹿楓堂よついろ日和』が最高だね。最近のだと『ガイコツ書店員本田さん』の一話も好きだったな。
でも『ゴールデンカムイ』にずっと夢中で、漫画作品としては一番好きかもしれない。アニメも超面白いよ。
日本でもたくさんの人が宅録で音楽制作に取り組んでいます。彼らに対してメッセージやアドバイスがあればお願いします。
いつも「何をするにも一つの正解なんてない」って言うようにしてる。
DAWは使いこなせればいろいろ自由に試せるし本当に便利で楽しいよ！

LA在住、Will WiesenfeldことBaths。音楽キャリアのスタートは、両親にピアノ教室に入れてもらった4歳まで遡る。13歳の頃には、既にMIDIキーボードでレコーディングをするようになっていた。ある時、Björkの音楽に出会い衝撃を受けた彼は直ぐにビオラ、コントラバスそしてギターを習得し、新たな独自性を開花させていった。ファースト・アルバム「Cerulean」はインディーロック～ヒップホップリスナーまで巻込み多くの話題を呼んだ。 大病を患いその果で見事なまでの成長を成し遂げ、その年多数のメディアから年間ベストに挙げられたセカンド・アルバム「Obsidian」。ポップ・ミュージックの新たな可能性を拡張したサード・アルバム「Romaplasm」。その創り出すビートが今最も話題を呼ぶビートメイカー。
■Geotic
LA在住、Will Wiesenfeldが、Bathsとともに活動する別名義のプロジェクト。前作に引続きTychoを擁する、そして日本はよりリリース。
「Bathsはアクティブなリスニングで、Geoticはパッシブなリスニングである」──Baths、そしてGeoticこと、Will Wiesenfeldは、自身の二つのプロジェクトに対してこのように語る。
How was the tour in Germany this summer? What was memorable there?
It was great!
Very fast paced, a show almost every night for about 5 days and then flew straight home.
Berlin is always a blast, but we also played outdoor in a small town for the
last show.
We played in direct sunlight and it was so hot I basically had to play in a bathing suit haha 🙂
Please let us ask about your album “Romaplasm.”
Each song is partly in common, but also seemed to differ in BPM, a motif of lyrics, and so on.
How did you decide the order?
They’re all different fantasy-oriented situations, like little vignettes about other worlds.
Track order was based on the best pacing— I think the album is very hectic and a lot to digest so we did the best with the order, trying to have it go down as easy as possible.
In many of your songs, synthesizers are played with staccato notes, like percussion instruments. How did you make this sound?
I used Ableton Live and a lot of Reaktor plugins for the synth work. I made sure the decay and release on all the synths were all very low to keep them very percussive.
In the song Yeoman, each track has a part to draw attention, and beautifully harmonize altogether.
The way several vocal parts blend into one another was impressive. Did you think anything special when you compose this song?
Thank you! There were a lot of different inspirations for this, mostly anime / movies that had something to do with Airships, and so it was sort of a romanticized homage to those inspirations. There’s a bit of Howl’s Moving Castle, Eureka Seven, Final Fantasy VIII, etc.
The lyric of Adam Copies is about “Neon Genesis EVANGELION.”
The phrase “become one organ, break your frame” seems about Human Instrumentality Project.
Whose viewpoint is this lyric written from?
The entire song is sort of supposed to be from Shinji Ikari’s perspective but with a lot of embellishment. The stress, power and outrageousness he feels piloting an Eva all turned into a song…
The scream in the last part is also impressive.
I wonder if this scream was occurred unintentionally when you were recording the vocal part or planned in advance.
It was actually VERY planned in advance! I record at home so I’m never comfortable screaming like that at home in my apartment complex. I had to use my friend’s practice studio at like 6 or 7am before other bands showed up and started making noise. It was a whole process haha 😀
I love how humorous the Music Video “Out” is. I guess John Wiesenfield is your brother, isn’t he?
Please tell us about the casting and any episodes during this video making.
Yes, John is my brother 🙂
I just asked my friends to be in it, but I had to write a whole shot list and plan. We shot the whole thing in a day without any snags, but it was quite a process. Especially the makeup sequence. I had to buy and misuse almost $100 worth of makeup! My friend Mario was the Director of Photography who also shot the album cover for Romaplasm.
In the video, many posters of “broadback” were on the wall of your room. What does “broadback” mean to you?
Haha! They were sweaters from the clothing line Massive Goods, who feature the work of the gay manga artist + iluustrator Jiraiya. “Broadback” was a nickname in the song for the warrior + lover of the narrator in the lyrics. Just basically a big, muscular guy.
I love the new song of Geotic, too! Could you tell us more about an upcoming album?
Thanks!! It comes out in Japan on Tugboat Records Oct 17th, and I couldn’t be more excited. The Geotic set I’m playing in Tokyo is the debut of the new live set!

I LOVED the anime Rokuhoudo Yotsuiro Biyori, its the best subject manner imaginable…
I’m watching several new ones… I also loved the first episode of Skull-faced Bookseller Honda-san.
I’m obsessed with Golden Kamuy though, it might be the best manga I’ve read in years and the anime is super entertaining too.
More and more people are making music with DAW in Japan as well. Please give them a message or an advice.
I always like to say “There’s never one right way to do anything!” DAWs are extremely versatile and the fun of using them is the absolute freedom to experiment!
