REVIEW

REVIEW

What if a virile young man wanders in a forest of fairies and a petit witch…?
A top leader of girl culture in the world, Sofia Coppola, who won an Oscar for the Original Screenplay of “Lost in Translation” in her early thirties, has become the second female director in the film history to achieve such a brilliant feat. “The Beguiled” brought her the award of best director at Cannes this year.
The story begins with an encounter in the dark, beautiful forest of a corporal in the Union Army and a ‘fairy’ of a girls’ school in Virginia during the American Civil War in 1864.
A talented woman Sofia, who has one of the greatest director Francis F. Coppola as a father and appeared in his masterpiece “The Godfather”, gained a reputation as a female director in the world with “The Virgin Suicides”.
Many lovers and girl travellers in the world still visit the hotel Park Hyatt in Shinjuku after watching “Lost in Translation”.
There is a way to see the film this time not only as a thriller but also as a ‘girl meets boy’ story, which is her specialty with the deep description of fashion and love.
She describes the real relationship between a man and a woman with aestheticism and intensity through a soldier and ladies during the Civil War, while her father gorgeously showed a gangster family’s bonds and love during Prohibition.
Sofia and Philippe Le Sourd, a director of photography, got scenes on a film with a sunlight and a light of a candle to create aesthetic images and used vintage lenses inspired Akira Kurosawa’s “Rashomon”.
Is the truth of sexual relations cruel when an essential thing is on film under a critical circumstances which should never be happened? Or is this an ultimate humour? Please find out Sofia’s answer yourself.
