STORY
「ニューヨーク・マガジン」で活躍する人気コラムニストのジャネットは、恋人との婚約も決まり、順風満帆な日々を送っていた。ある日、ジャネットは車道に飛び出してきたホームレスの男性に遭遇する。それは、なんと彼女の父・レックスだった――。レックスは、いつか家族のために「ガラスの城」を建てるという夢を持つエンジニア、妻のローズマリーはアーティスト。彼らは定職につかず理想や夢ばかりを追い求め、自由気ままに暮らしていた。物理学や天文学などを教えてくれる父・レックスは、幼い頃のジャネットたち兄弟にとってカリスマ的な存在で、聡明なジャネットのことを彼は「チビヤギ」と呼び、愛情を注いでいた。しかし、仕事が上手くいかないレックスは次第に酒の量が増え、家で暴れるようになっていく。やがて、高校生になったジャネットは大学進学をきっかけに、ニューヨークへと旅立ち、両親との関係を断とうとするが・・・。(公式サイトより）

子は親を選べない。この言葉は多くの場合、一部の大人たちの管理下に置かれる子供たちの不安とトラウマを形容するのに用いられる。また、これは同時にそのような大人たちを親だからという理由で許さなければならないのだと人々を苦しめることもある。デスティン・ダニエル・クレットン監督『ガラスの城の約束』は私たちが直面するこうしたジレンマを描いた映画である。
主人公ジャネット・ウォールズが両親から受ける虐待とネグレクトは非意図的なものである。なぜならば彼らが社会のしがらみから解き放たれた自由な生活を子供たちに与えているのだと頑なに信じているからだ。しかし、大人になったジャネットは自分のこのような子供時代を悪い思い出として一蹴できず、受け入れるのに悩まされることになる。それは彼女がその経験に二つの矛盾する側面を見るからだ。一つの側面は両親の明らかな無責任さと裏切りを表すものであり、もう一つはそんな両親が自分に与えてくれたポジティブな影響である。虐待は乱暴と苦痛から成る事象だと捉えられがちだ。しかし、子どもたちの記憶に伴うのは親から注がれた愛情の記憶や自分が彼らに信頼感を抱いていた覚えだ。決して幸せとは言えない記憶を乗り越えるのが難しいのはこのためである。本作はこの難儀を、両親を軽蔑して避けることができなければ、彼らの誤ちを受け入れて許すこともできないジャネットの葛藤から切り開いている。
『ガラスの城の約束』は過去との向き合いという普遍的な主題を持つ映画だ。ジャネットは両親を理解することによりこれを達成しようとする。これはあくまで彼女が自分を受け入れて前進するのに取った選択肢であり、映画が彼女の両親に同情的であることを表すものではない。ジャネットの意志が表すのは不完全な過去との和解がもたらす自己受容の大切さである。

Children cannot choose their parents. This saying, on most occasions, serves as an accurate summary of how frustrating, and at times traumatizing it is to have yourself in the hands of certain adults. Otherwise, it oppresses us as if to say we have to forgive them and move on regardless of their mistakes, as they are in the end, our only parents. The Glass Castle by Destin Daniel Cretton is a film that captures this dilemma that many of us face in life.
Protagonist Jeanette Walls experiences unintentional abuse and neglect from her parents who believe that they are providing a bohemian, unconstrained life to their children. It’s an upbringing that she struggles to accept in the future since she cannot simply reflect on it as a dark time. Instead, she sees two sides to her experience that contradict each other and confuses her; one is a side that clearly displays irresponsibility and betrayal from her parents, and another is a side that convinces her of her parents’ positive impact on her life. The experience of abuse is generally perceived as a series of mistreatment and pain. However for the children, it comes along with memories of being loved by or attached to their parents, and this is what makes it hard for them to let go of the experience. In Jeanette’s case, she struggles to either despise and avoid, or accept and forgive her parents. With this being said, the film portrays her memories and emotions vividly.
The Glass Castle is a film with a universal theme, which is, facing your past. Jeanette’s way of doing so is demonstrated through forgiving her parents. This act is a choice that she personally makes to be at peace with herself but this does not imply that the film is sympathetic towards Jeanette’s parents. What lies in Jeanette’s decision is the importance of self-acceptance that comes with being at peace with an imperfect past.
