The value of works by Jean-Michel Basquiat, who led the art scene in the 80’s, is now more and more heightened.
The exhibition of portraits of him by Roland Hagenberg, “Basquiat and NY Artists”, is now held at Mitsubishi Estate Artium in Fukuoka, until 12th October, Sunday.

Basquiat started paintings on streets under the name of SAMO while he was still in a school. He started to gain popularity from various people and became a star in the art field, but passed away because of overdose on drugs at the age of 27.

“I’ve never considered art while I’m working, I think about the life,” he said before his death.

The portraits vividly captured that he was powerfully drawing the reality of NY in the 80’s and his sensitive emotion reflecting surroundings, not an outlaw of himself.

You can find his emotional power and the way he lived as an artist from valuable interview videos and pictures.
