What made you start drawing?

I’d always loved pictures and was drawing since I was small. After my exams had finished I had spare time before I graduated and so I started drawing on the back of flyers I had. It was a way of stress release.

Your work is so colourful and your use of colour is really impressive!

Yeah,I’d always preferred foreign animation over Japanese anime, I was only watching things like Powerpuff Girls and Adventure Time. I think from there I got my sense of colour.

For each person the colour of their face differs…

I decide the colour on the first impression I get. Or based on talking to the person about what colour they like – I can take that into consideration too. The times when some one wants to know ‘What colour am I? Please draw me ‘ and they they are so eager to see it, those times make me so happy. It’s not that it’s their aura, but I just feel this colour represents this person kind of thing.

What colour are you?

I can’t draw myself, but I guess my skin is yellow.  I like the colour yellow, just from looking you can feel there’s energy right? Drawing with it too makes me happy.

Looking at your photographs and illustrations, humans feature as a subject in alot of your work right?

I like people, and my goal with my work is to somehow make people happy with these two dimensional pictures and photos. My motto is questioning how I can make people happy with such little.

How do you take your photos?

Originally I liked an ambience of ennui, but recently I’ve been liking happy and genial photographs. Photographs are something you can only take in a  moment so I don’t like when it’s over manufactured and I don’t want to take photos of just anyone and anything, so I find it difficult.  Right now I’m the middle of searching.  I can’t draw people that have a close relationship to pictures – the time when I was drawing my parents was the time that I felt my work was a success. With photos, perhaps its something I’ll never have the answer to.

What kind of work do you want to create?

I won’t to photograph famous people, and it would be nice if my Instagram followers and likes went up, but I don’t know if it would be appreciated by my grandmother’s or parents generation. You don’t know how long Instagram is going to be around.  I have a lot of likes for photos that I don’t like, and about 10 likes for so many of my photos that I do like. My real ambition is to create work that can touch people, even if it doesn’t get that many Instagram  likes. If my work could be something precious to someone, and they keep a hold of it until its worn and tattered –  that would make me happy.

Where do you want to from now?

My dream is to live off only my drawings and photographs. After ten years I have plans to be based abroad, and also I’ve decided after ten years to go to America and make my work there. In 5 years times I want to have studied language abroad, come back to save money, and then after 10 years leave. I can only by a one way ticket. People need a dream, and to make photos and leave a mark right? In the more imminent future, I’m in the middle of planning my graduate exhibition.
