Originally were you aiming to become a painter?

My parents are hairdressers, so that’s what I originally wanted to become. I qualified as a hairdresser, but then I still wanted to go to unversity! I had the chance to talk directly with a teacher at Nihon University College of Art, and they told me that if I went there I will become able to do anything alone, so after that meeting I decided to go to  NUCA.

What made you start illustrating?

Since I was small I often drew pictures. In my art classes the standard would be to draw from observation , but instead of creating an exact copy it was ok to draw freely, and from that I think I began my own practice.

Since when did you start thinking about illustration?

My mother did encourage me to become an illustrator, but at that time that I associated it with drawing in the anime-cartoon style, so I wasn’t really interested. I first began to get a sense of illustration after I met my lecturers.  When I showed them my portfolio they said ‘You can draw!’ and they found my specialism for me. From there, I sometimes got commisions from friends and people in my area.

The first time I recieved money for my work was at the university festival; many people were buying things and gave me great feedback, which gave me confidence. Since then I began thinking of illustration as work, and as something to show people.

Many of your illustrations are themed around movies and old actresses, have you always had an interest in this kind of culture?

I’m not addicted to this culture but, ever since I was young I’ve liked different things to other people. As a junior high school student I started to watch overseas artists on Youtube, then in high school I began to dig even deeper and by the time I entered university I was listening to things that nobody had ever heard of.  Taking a different route to the ordinary was fun.

Your illustrations are from drawn from observation, but they’re not exact depictions are they.

I wanted my own style and so I spent a period researching.  But my friends say I’ve never changed.

In what kind of situations do you make your illustrations?

A lot are done at home.   Because of the way I draw, a place where I can access the internet easily is good.

When you draw pictures, do you need only one source image, or do you look at various ones?

I don’t just look at one, but many various images.

Within your generation are there any artists or illustrators that you take inspiration from?

It’s like a book fair parody called  ‘Tokyo Art Bukkake Fair’,  Those who take part, like Ken Kagami, Tondabayashi Ran, and Masano Hirayama, the people of this field are who I like. The people that like this will absolutely gather so the distance between artist and fan is small.  I also want to be close to fans.

What kind of person are you drawn in by?

Theres no one that I’m really a fan of, but I think its good when people like Haru of high(er) magazine, Mayu Kakihata and Aoi are rapidly making and releasing their products . Seeing this encourages me to work harder!

When you travel, how do you spend your time?

I go to Hawaii mostly every year and just take my time while I’m there. I usually spend the day by the hotel pool and go out in the evening, but recently its more the case that I’ve been going out by myself to places I’ve researched.

During travelling,  do you walk around with your sketchbook?

I don’t carry my sketchbook. It’s difficult to draw moving things, but I’d like to be able to.

What kind of things do you want to try and draw next?

I want to be able to draw various things in my style. I want to try and draw things other than humans, and make gifs with moving things.

How do you want to be seen by people?

I want to be close with my fans, so as well as my work, I hope people can get to know and like me. I want to show them who I am through my illustration.

Tell us something about you!

It’s not that I reject digital but, I want to put my heart into my work and persist with drawing using pen. Also, did you know, an illustrator resembles their illustrations!
