HEY&Ho.

HEY&Ho.

What made you have a shop of hasami-yaki?
There are some shops dealing and selecting the products of ‘HASAMI’, one of the most major lines of Maruhiro, in Hakata or Tenjin. But I wanted to show the whole brand of Maruhiro, not only a few selection of them. Then, I asked a friend who is working for Maruhiro and decided I would have a shop to show everything.

Where does the unique name ‘HEY&Ho.’ come from?

It comes from a phrase of a song ‘Yosaku’ by Saburo Kitajima, “Hey hey ho, hey hey ho”. I thought it would be cool to combine with &. In addition, ‘H’ means ‘House Industries’, a font brand from Hasami and America!

Why did you choose Itoshima to open the shop?

Nowadays, more and more tourists from around Japan visit Itoshima. They could find the all hasami-yaki products only at a captive store of Maruhiro in Arita, Saga prefecture before, so I thought if there is a shop in Itoshima, it would be nice for those tourists. To be honest I just wanted to enjoy a relaxing time by the sea, haha.

So, for what do you feel that you made a right choice?

That is for that I can introduce hasami-yaki to many people! Some visit Itoshima for HEY&Ho., but the others just come and stop by while they travel. Those who didn’t know about this pottery happen to come here, see and pick up the items, and end up liking them. Just like that makes me pleased. This is a good point of tourist spot.

How do you select the products?

Maruhiro has many brands such as ‘Monohara’ or ‘Baba-shoten’ as well as a particular famous model ‘HASAMI’. We have a hundred variation of small cups called ‘soba-choko’ of Baba-shoten, some of which are modernized from traditional pictures with craftspersonship which has a 400-year old history, or collaborated with some illustrators like noncheleee and Shuntaro Takeuchi. The selection is also made along with seasons, in autumn and winter, for example, gratin dishes.

Would you tell me how the collaboration with noncheleee happened?

In fact, we are old friends because we were both in different bands. I followed his Instagram soon after he started it, and I really like his illustrations he posted sometimes. Then there was no reasons we didn’t work together. It was before he gets popularity as an illustrator.

Do you design not only a signboard but also the items such as a t-shirt or a tote bag by yourself?

It is like noncheleee gives shape to my ideas. Responding to my discursive ideas, he always brings me something more than I expected. It is his unique point that we can always achieve a good collaboration. I like that his relaxed-style illustration makes a harmony with an atmosphere of Itoshima.

What do you think of the charm of hasami-yaki?
I like them because they are useful to be stacked and stored or because I don’t have to be careful so much to use them available for a good price. It is like jeans that I can put on every day, not like a clothes that your mother tells you to wear only for a special day. A strong and useful plate is the most appealing to me.

Do you have a plan to have another shops or anything?

I’m thinking to have a shop in a town like Tenjin someday…because whether people come or not is easily affected by weather conditions by the sea. I want to, however, spend time and work with my own pace in Itoshima, so it would be better if the other one have a shop to sell them in Tenjin, haha.

It must be one of the attractive points of this shop that Shige-san’s relaxing and funny character which makes you want to visit again. HEY&Ho. is located just in front of the beautiful scenery of ocean. How about visiting there while a drive on a nice weekend to find your favourite hasami-yaki?
