ミュージシャンは never young beach, D.A.N., yahyel, ZOMBIE-CHANG, Maika Loubte, jan and naomi などが来てくださいます。

1st anniversary party

yahyel、never young beach、jan and naomi、D.A.N.

takako noelさんは写真集を、daigoさん(D.A.N.)

What was the way of opening TETRO?

All TETRO staffs were working for the same salon, but we found it was difficult to do what we want to in the big company and decided to do by ourselves. There are somethings which can be done only when we are young and now is the era of youth culture in Tokyo. I started to talk about the separation with our owner, Maito about two years ago. We talked that the store location should not be busy even in Shibuya and walked a lot, and we happened to find that place.

Who is your customer?

Many musicians like never young beach, D.A.N., yahyel, ZOMBIE-CHANG, Maika Loubte, jan and naomi and so on visit us. VERDY, a graphic designer introduced us the members of TOTALFAT or 04 Limited Sazabys. Actors like Kengo Koura and models like Ruka, Serena Motola, Kurumi Emond or Miyuki Emond. Kisshomaru Tsutamura or Yoko Kusano are the photographers. Many artist who match with the genre of TETRO come to our place.

What do you think of the reason why various artists get together at TETRO?

I think the people who have the similar idea toward the work come to us. Those who I can really respect have the same essential quality. Um, it is difficult to explain, to verbalize. Anyway, it is a groove. We can make the groove.

Many indie artists appeared on your first anniversary party. How did they come?

They all -yahyel, never young beach, jan and naomi, D.A.N. are the customers I cut their hair, but I originally have been a fan of them. I found yahyel when they were the opening act of Homeshake’s japan tour, who was a guitarist of Mac DeMarco. After that, I went to see them at Organ Bar in Shibuya, whose capacity is only 20 people. They didn’t even release the audio source. Because they were very cool, I talked to them and invited to our salon there.

You go and get to know them by yourselves to make them come to your salon.

I am so lucky that I can meet the good artists. We went to FUJI ROCK as a company retreat last year, but I didn’t listen to jan and naomi at that time even though I heard their good reputation. I knew they appeared on FUJI ROCK, but I didn’t see them. The curious man I approached by chance was jan! That was the trigger. Later I knew that my friends know each other as well.

Please tell us about the project that takako noel offered the photo book and daigo from D.A.N. contributed music.

DAIKANYAMA TSUTAYA BOOKS directly offered us to stock the photo book or the CDs. We held the photo exhibition there, and after that we worked together again. I’d like to make our visual image happen once or twice a year.

It can be said on the 1st anniversary party, but all gathered because they were not so business. They liked us because we are not all for business. I talk with TETRO staffs that we should go the way between creative and business. Only to do creatively is like a masturbation. It’s not a real.

What kind of role do you want to play for the artists?

Firstly, we are not completely the artists. We can’t be and shouldn’t be the artists, because the customers are the main character. If we were the main, it would have been a piece of work, not the real. Not too much, not in shade. Or it may be a small but necessary role. It’s like a puzzle piece.

What brought you a feeling of accomplishment most?

I’m rarely receive a sense of accomplishment. I’m not overwhelmed because such a feeling lasts only for the moment and the next thing I want to do is emerged. Accomplishment become a thing of the past. I rather feel frantic. We can’t do nothing without the customers, so I don’t want to make them bored. TETRO itself always must be the interesting place, and we have to improve our skills, of course.

Did you think of becoming a hair stylist from when you were the student?

The first time I went to the salon was when I was a senior student, and I suddenly decided to become a stylist. I had been practicing judo before then, so I didn’t have to go. I liked fashion and felt superiority to the local people, but I found that I was not stylish then. There was a music I had never listened to. It was quite shocking for me.

There were the original photos by Ryan McGinley, Tim Barber and Chad Moore in the store, and the staffs look for the good music on YouTube or Sound Cloud together when they are free. He told us his recommended movies or artists with a smile.

You really like the culture!

Yes, I do! That is our strong point at the same time. We need to differentiate our salon from the others to evaluate it. So, we decided to push hard for the cultural things. There are many people who are talented and have good tastes in Tokyo, so I consider how we can be exciting among them.

Lastly, please tell us what your plan for the future is.

I want to make an opportunity that exciting people can get attention. I plan to shoot some new visual image in May. It is currently projected that I ask a foreign photographer to shoot the work next year or the year after. However, our essential quality is to work as the hair stylists, and this is the most creative approach for us.
