Sean Nicholas Savage

We had an interview with one of the famous photographers, Maya Fuhr. She is now a person who is working around the world, but she had spent whole teenage life in a small town in Canada. Everybody recognizes her by her fashion photography. Her photos are now able to be seen in the ads of TOPSHOP, adidas, a fashion magazine, NYLON JAPAN and so on. Her photos have the combination of nostalgic and new trend taste. She is working not only on fashion photography but also documentary projects. They are seen by lots of people through the ads and magazines around the world.

ー What made you to be a photographer?
I started taking photos due to small-town boredom in high school. It was a creative outlet then and presently; now living in a much bigger city. I was obsessed with the escapism of fashion in movies and magazines, and how it sort of represented a glamorous, colourful version of my own life. After I was taking photos in my teenage years, I’d notice that I was creating my own idea of perfection and capturing moments that I wanted to remember. When I was in film school, i’d make short films that looked like photographs- static in one scene. It took my exploration in film making to really realize what I wanted to be.

ー Do you have any favorite photographer specifically? If so, who?
Some of my fave photographers: Tracey Emin’s self portraits, Maurizio Cattelan, Sally Mann, Jeurgen Teller.

ー While taking pictures, what do you usually think about?
Naturally, i’m usually thinking about the composition, focus and colour optics.

ー When / where do you get inspirations for photography?
I get inspiration from being around creative friends, female expression, colour pallets in textures and clothing and weird out-dated spaces. Best way to always photograph fresh ideas is through travelling and not getting bored.

ー You often take photos for fashion brand. Which fashion brand do you usually wear?
TBH I almost only wear vintage clothes. I like that they’re one-of-a-kind finds. I have 2 or 3 designer pieces by Alexander Wang and Chanel but that’s about it. When I shoot for brands like Unif and Topshop – I get gifted some pretty cool stuff too.

ー What do you like to do in your free time?
I really like to travel, eat yummy food, cuddle, do yoga here and there, and party.

ー if you were not a photographer, what would you like to be?
If I wasn’t a photographer i’d like to be a psychologist or actor.

ー Which photo is your most favorite?
I actually really like my photo of Sean Nicholas Savage sitting in a bathroom.

ー Do you have any plan to come to Japan?
One day yes, just looking for the perfect excuse. I love Japanese culture and how beautiful everyone is.

ー What is your next project?
I have an on-going collab series shooting fashion designers modeling their own lines. I’m also going to Israel and I have a cool documentary project coming soon.
