カリフォルニア出身、２０歳の冒険心に溢れるナタリー・ヤンの胸の奥に迫った。ナタリーは、自身の作品に自然の心を持って共感することを表現できる女性。彼女の作品は、若々しくもありながらどこか懐かしい雰囲気を持っていて、彼女の周りの空気感を感じることができる。彼女は最も純粋な姿の裸体を撮ることに優れている。社会的に性的対象に見られているものをそのように表現することは普通の人にはできないことだ。しかし、ナタリーはこんなにも気楽に、そして完璧に表現することができる。ナタリーは、企画作品でさえ、誰かのフォトアルブムから切り取ったページのように作る才能を持っているのだ。ルックブックの為に写真を撮るときも、友達と遊んでいるときの思い出として撮るときも、ナタリーは写真にそれを生かしている。
ー自己紹介をお願いします。
私はカリフォルニアのサンタクルーズを拠点にしている写真家です。タマルパイスっていう山の麓で育ったんだけど、その形から、タマルパイスは、横たわって寝そべる女性の身体に例えられているの。タマルパイスは私のミューズというか、私のインスピレーションの源。今まで撮った写真は全部、タマルパイスから何らかの影響を受けていると思う。私の作品は、感情や、姿、自然や存在すること…といったテーマに対する探究でもある。
ー写真を撮り始めたきっかけはなんですか？
私はずっと前から思い出や懐かしさを感じるものに惹かれているの。具体的で、尚且つずっと持っていられる物が欲しかったから、写真を撮り始めたのかも。私は、写真を撮るという行為は、永遠に過去を生き続けさせる手段であると思っています。
ーあなたの「人生観」はなんですか？仕事にどのような影響を与えていますか？
それはまだ分からないの。まだ考え中よ。頑張って働くことは私にとってとても大切な事。私は今の仕事にすごく夢中だし、全力投球している。これまでの努力が実を結んだおかげなのか、自分の想像以上に、アーティストとしても、人間としても、成長することが出来たの。同様に、「信じる」ことも、私の人生においては、すごく重要ね。自分自身、自分の能力もそうだし、あとは、この世の全ての出来事はなにか理由があって起きていると信じているの。
ーあなたの撮る写真からあなたは美神を持っているように感じ取れますですが、あなたはモデルに何を求めていますか？
私のミューズのほとんどが、私の親友よ。私は女性だから男性よりも女性を撮影することが多いし。あと、自分と仲の良い人を撮影するの好き。それだと、モデルと私の間に既に信頼関係があるからね。そのほうが、もっと自然に撮影できるし。私がそうやって自分のミューズである親友達を撮影させてもらっているって、すごく特別なことのように感じるわ。被写体とアーティストっていう関係性によって、個人的な関係以外で新しい観点から彼らを理解することが出来るから。
ーあなたの仕事の新たな側面でもある、ヌード写真の撮影についてお聞きします。どのようにして、あなたは裸体をみていますか。特にあなたにとってそれはどういった意味があるのですか？
私の周りの環境や、被写体となるモデル達には、似ているところが多くあるの。私は、探検する場所がたくさんあるカリフォルニアのローリングフィルで育った。私たちは地球から産まれ、私のヴィジョンを具現化し、オルタナティブな世界を作りあげる被写体と、風景との間の自然な関係の中でコミュニケーションをしていると強く感じているの。
ールックブックとかは別にして、あなたのシューティングはいつも計画されているものなのでしょうか、それとも計画性のないものなのでしょうか？
両方ね。時々、すごく撮影したいって思える様なロケーションを見つける事があるの。そういう時は、友達と一緒にその撮影スポットの周辺を散策したりして、ロケハンしてから撮影に入る。だけど私達は、まるで夕日を追いかけるように、しょっちゅうビーチを走り回っているから、そういう時に突然撮影が始まったりもするの。だから私はいつどこに行く時も、常にカメラを持ち歩くようにしているわ。
ーものつくりをするときに、あなたがインスパイアされるものはなんですか？
私は信じられないような素晴らしい場所で育ったの。そういった場所に住んでいてインスパイアを受けないなんて、難しいことだと思う。もちろん、私の感性が許す限り、その場所から離れたり遠ざかったりもしたわ。だけど、私のカリフォルニアへの繋がりはますます深くなっていった。それから、私の友達たちは、私をクリエイティブにしてくれた。皆はそれぞれ、かなり違うタイプの人間性を持っているんだけど、一緒にいるとすごくフィットするの。仕事を通して、私のホームと、ホームに対する愛情にコネクトすることに、これ以上の選択肢(写真を撮ること)はないように感じたの。
We enter the in depth mind of Natalie Yang, an adventurous 20 year old California native. A woman who seems to empathize with the mind of nature and expresses it in her work. Her work holds a youthful and nostalgic atmosphere mixed with an undertone of maturity and an understanding for the elements around her. She excels at photographing the naked body in its purest form. To do so to such an object deemed sexual to the public is a job not too many can achieve. But yet, it is done in such an easygoing and flawless manner. Natalie has the ability to make a planned editorial look like a few pages of a photo album.
Whether it be shooting a look book, or just documenting an adventure with her friends, Natalie makes the photos come to life.
ーCould you introduce yourself?
I am a photographer based in Santa Cruz, California. I grew up on Mt. Tamalpais, a mountain often recognized for its resemblance to a sleeping lady. She is my original muse and every photograph I’ve ever taken has been influenced by her in one way or another. My work is an exploration of feeling and figure, nature and state of being.
ーWhat prompted you to start taking photos?
I’ve always been really drawn to the notions of holding on to memories and nostalgia, I think because these are two feelings that I experience often. I began shooting because I suppose I wanted something tangible to hold on to, and for me photography is a way of keeping the past alive.
What’s your life philosophy? How do you apply this in your work?
I’m still trying to figure that out for the most part. Hard work is important to me, I’ve thrown myself completely into my craft and it takes all my energy to push myself creatively. But so far, it has paid off enormously and I have grown more both as an artist and as a human being in the past year than I could have thought possible. I think trust is an extremely important part of my life as well. Trusting myself and my abilities, trusting that everything happens for a reason.
ーJudging by your photos you have several muses; what do you look for in a model?
For the most part my muses are my best friends. I shoot women more often than men because I am a woman. I’m drawn to shooting the people closest to me because there is a trust already built between the two of us. It’s more natural that way. I feel so special that my muses allow me to capture them in the ways that I do, and this relationship between subject and artist allows me to understand them from a new perspective, outside of our personal relationship.
ーYou also shoot a lot of nude photography, which adds another dimension to your work. How do you view the naked body? Does it mean anything to you in particular?
I see many similarities between the figure and the landscape that surrounds me. I have grown up between rolling hills and the Pacific, leaving me endless places to explore. We come from the earth and I feel strongly about communicating a more natural relationship between figure and landscape to create an alternative world in which my dreams become reality.
ーApart from look books and whatnot, are your shoots usually planned or are they spontaneous candids?
Both. Sometimes I’ll find a new location that I really want to shoot at, so my friends and I will explore around the area and we’ll shoot. But we spend a lot of time running around the coast chasing sunsets, so I’ll shoot candid experiences like that as well. I kind of just bring my camera with me everywhere I go.
ーWhat inspires you to create?
I’ve grown up in an incredible place. I feel like it would be difficult to feel uninspired in a place like this. Of course I go through ups and downs as far as my creative drive goes, but my connection with the California coast runs deep throughout me and ultimately has shaped my voice as an artist. My friends also inspire me to create. We’re all so different but fit perfectly together and we’re all experiencing this crazy part of life both as one unit as well as individuals. I feel like I have no other choice but to communicate my feelings of gratitude and love for my home and my friends through my work.
