彼は独学で写真を学んだポーランド人のフォトグラファーのLukasz Wierzbowski。彼の目指している写真は、モデルと、彼自身の回りの繋がりを写真一枚に撮っておさめること。どの撮影にも事前に細かい計画を立てることなく撮影に望んでいく。撮影のセッションを彼は、ある意味「旅」みたいだと表現する。そんな旅みたいな撮影を毎回するにあたって、彼自身が現場の雰囲気やモデルから触発されることが多々あるという。モデルたちとのセッションの結果生まれる彼の写真はまるで映画のワンシーンを切り取った要素をも感じさせるほどだ。どんな撮影場所でも、アクティブで型破りな方法を用いて撮影をしている彼の作品は、見るものを新しい写真の世界へと引き込んで行ってくれる。次はどんな世界へ引き込んでくれるのか、次から次へと作品を見たくなる魅力的な写真家Lukaszの作品を要チェック。
—始めに、写真のユニークなアイディアはどこからきますか？例えば、ある写真ではモデルがブックシェルフの隙間からを手を出しているところを撮影していますよね。そして、撮影するにあたって、モデルと身の回りの繋がりを写真で表現しているとおっしゃっていましたが、どういった方法でそういった写真を撮るのか説明して頂けますか？
自然と関係性が結果的に見えてくるんだ。与えられた空間で計画なしに撮影するのが僕には一番リラックスできるんです。その撮影方法は純粋な楽しみに満ちているから、どんな天候や、照明の状況、空間の形にも影響されない。僕はただ自分の直感に従って、撮影環境とモデルの姿勢のバランスをとることで自然と基本的なモデルの表現を忘れながら撮影に集中できているからね。大まかに指示することで、最も自然なモデルたちの表現力を撮ることが出来ます。
ー好きな、または、インスピレーションの元になっている日本人フォトグラファーはいますか？
僕は荒木 経惟の大ファンです。彼のセンスと美的感覚はとってもユニークなんだよね。彼は本物だよ。
ー新しいプロジェクトありますか？または、まだ撮ったことのない撮影について教えて下さい。
今次号の写真を集めている途中で、とても楽しみにしている韓国のインディペンデントパブリッシャ-のSSE projectから今年後半にリリースしようとしています。
この数ヶ月の間は、いくつか個展を開こうとしています。それまでは、クライアントワークと個人の企画に取りかかっています。自分のローファイな企画である「Magnetic Elements」では、普段自分のポートフォリオサイトでやっているクレイジーなことからは離れて更新しようとしているよ。
ー日本に行く予定はありますか？
今はないけど、いつか行きたいな。日本を訪れることはいつも僕の夢なんだ。他の人や環境と一緒にやるには、本当にユニークですごく住むにはいいところだよね。
ー最後に、日本の雑誌やウェブサイトでやってみたいことはありますか？
僕は大好きな雑誌「Union」で少し特集されているんだ。僕の最近の本「Sequin Covered Swans」についてはとてもいい評価を頂いたよ。日本でも僕のファンがいると知って、とても嬉しくて有り難いです。
He is a 31 years old self-taught Polish photographer, Lukasz Wierzbowski.
In his works, he tries to capture the relationship between the model and the surroundings in its purest form. Deciding not to plan all the details of each sessions in advance, every session is a journey for both him, and his models. Rather than forcing his vision on the shoot, Wierzbowski chooses to be inspired by the mood of the place and model’s attitude. That inspiration helps him use his space in active and sometimes even unconventional ways. Walking away from the normal, He looks to capture the in-between moments, giving the photos an almost movie still vibe.
-First where do you come up for the ideas behind your photos?
(For example you have one picture, where your model is reaching out from clearance of book shelf.It almost looks as if the model isn’t human. You say that you are trying to find the relationship between the model and the surroundings in your bio, and I was just wondering how you got to that point. Could you explain for me and my readers your process in finding that picture, throughout your pictures you have many of the same sort of, interesting, almost other worldly scenes, and I was curious if you could explain your method for those photos a bit more. )
It comes naturally as a result of spontaneous interaction. Using any given space in active way without prior planning allows me to be fully relaxed. That way, the whole act of taking photos is pure joy. This way I don’t have to be stressed by the weather, lighting conditions or form of the space. I simply follow my instincts trying to balance the models attitude with the environment while forgetting about the standard functions of objects and following the body language of the model.
I like giving very overall instruction, that way I can capture models interpretation in the most natural form.
—Do you have any Japanese photographers you like or take inspiration from?
I’m a huge admirer of Nobuyoshi Araki. His sensibility and aesthetic are truly unique. He is a true master.
—Do you have a new project, or something you are really interested in shooting that you haven’t yet?
I’m in the process of gathering works for my next book which I plan to release later this year with Korean publisher called SSE project which I’m very excited about. In the following months I will be taking part in few exhibitions. In the meantime I work on both commissioned and personal projects. I try to regularly update my very lo-fi side project Magnetic Elements (http://magneticelements.tumblr.com/), which allows me to take a brake from the often crazy stuff featured on my regular portfolio site.
—Have you ever been to Japan?
I haven’t but I would love to. Visiting Japan has actually been one of my all time dreams. It seems like a truly unique and extraordinary living place, in harmony with other people and the environment.
—Finally, have you ever been featured in any Japanese magazines or websites?
I’ve been featured few times in a lovely magazine called Union. I received a really nice feedback regarding my last book “Sequin Covered Swans” (http://www.flotsambooks.com/SHOP/PH01199.html)
Knowing that I have fans as far away as in Japan makes me ecstatic and very grateful.
