FUJI ROCK FESTIAL ROOKIE STAGEにバンド「鬼の右腕」として、そしてiD Japanにも取り上げられたバンドD.A.N. のサポートメンバーとして活動している人気沸騰中のアーティスト小林うてな。2016年5月には待望の初ソロアルバム「VATONSE」をリリース。そんな期待が高まっている彼女にWoolyは取材を行った。
彼女の生み出す音楽にはバウンドリーは存在しない。どこからか「音」を引っ張り出し、それを組み立てて「音楽」を作り出す。ハープの奏でる音のような清らかな歌声を聞いていると思った次の瞬間、ボイスチェンジャーでまるで地獄から聞こえる魔王のような声に変わる。変化にちょっとハラハラしながらも聞く彼女の「音楽」はどこか引き込まれる要素がある。そんな枠にとらわれず作り出される音楽の過程は特徴的だ。
「音楽を作る際には2パターンあって、最初に景色やストーリーをイメージして音にしていくときと、何も考えずにいじることでその曲のストーリーがみつかるときがあります。基本的に歌詞もないので、言葉から生まれる感情よりも映像や風景を音にしています。」
曲の中で特徴的だった歌「ポテト」。ポテトのイメージから懸け離れたロックでアップテンポな音楽は「マックになるポテト、ポテチになるポテトなどの逆らえない運命」を描き出しているのだとか。
D.A.N.のサポートメンバーとしてライブなどでも活躍している彼女。
別のアーティストと共演している時とソロで演奏している時では変化はありますか？
「音楽をしているっていうことにかわりはないので、差は特にないです。ソロでは自分のやりたいことをやって、D.A.N.においては、彼らの出したい音をだせるように心がけつつ、聴いて下さっている方々に意識をむけたいなと思っています。D.A.N.に限らず、サポートで参加させて頂くときって、その人の音楽を尊重して、自分が何をすべきか役割を見極めることが大切だと思ってます。」
音楽性が似ている、また同じ方向に向かっていると感じますか？
「彼らから色んな刺激をもらっています。でもそれぞれの時間の流れがあるから、音楽性において同じ方向に向かう必要ってないと思う。D.A.N.のつくる音楽はわたしにはつくれないけれど、今一緒に音を出せてるってすごく貴重なことだと思ってます。」
そんなソロで活躍する一方D.A.N.のサポートメンバーとして同時に活動している小林うてなから今後とも目が離せない。
小林うてな
長野県原村出身。東京を拠点に活動するソロアーティスト。
ラップトップ、ラップ／オペラ／メタルなどから影響を受けた歌唱、スティールパン、マリンバ、シンセサイザー、パッドなどの機材を多様に用い、演奏手段を選ばない独創的な作曲スタイルを持つ。
現在ソロ活動と平行して、「D.A.N.」のライブにサポートで参加する他、映画の劇中曲製作、楽曲アレンジ、音源制作等も手がける。
これまで、バンド「鬼の右腕」を結成、2013年FUJI ROCK FESTIVAL ROOKIE STAGEに出演し同年解散。また、蓮沼執太フィル、トクマルシューゴ＋、坂本美雨、Ackky、鈴木博文、ダニエル・クオンなどのライブ／レコーディングに参加。
ミックスに葛西敏彦／マスタリングにseihoを迎え、2016年５月に初のソロアルバムを２.5D PRODUCTIONよりリリース。
Kobayashi Utena have participated in the FUJI ROCK FESTIVAL ROOKIE STAGE as the member of “Onino Migiude”. She currently works as the supporting member of the band DAN, while working as a solo artist. She has released her long waited solo album “VATONSE” this May. Wooly was able to interview such artist with increasing attention.
Boundaries don’t exist in her songs. She extracts “sounds” from everywhere and constructs music from it. Even if we hear a voice as smooth and soft as the Harp, the next thing you know, you will be hearing a voice as deep as a demon. With slight nervousness from the extravagant changes in her music, her song has intriguing elements. Such music’s process of creation is something peculiar.
“When creating music, there are 2 patterns. The first way is when I imagine a scenery or a storyline, and convert the image to the sound. The other way is when I don’t think of anything and find the music when playing around with the instruments. For most of the time I don’t have lyrics in my songs so I put more value on getting the image or a scenery into sounds, rather than the emotions.”
The song “Potato” is very up-tempo and rock, which doesn’t quite match the image of a potato. When asked about this there was a surprise answer;
“Well I tried to portray the fate of a potatoes which they have no right to decide if they want to be the French fries in MacDonald or being a potato chips.”
She has also been working as a supporting member of the band DAN.
When working with various other artists, are there any differences within you?
“The fact that I am doing music doesn’t change so I don’t quite feel the difference. But I get to do what I want to do when working solo, and I seem to concentrate more on the sounds which DAN seeks for. It’s not something particularly with DAN. When working as a supporting member with any artists, I respect the sounds and music they create and I feel it’s vital for me to distinguish my role.”
Do you feel that your taste of music is similar or feel the sense that they are in the same direction?
“They stimulate me in various ways. But we each have our own time and the flow, so I don’t feel the need to be facing the same direction. The music being created by DAN is something I cannot make, butI definatly feel it is precious that I am able to make music with them right now.”
We cannot keep our eyes off such artist working as solo but also as the supporting member of the band DAN.
Utena Kobayashi
Born in Haramura, Nagano. Solo artist based in Tokyo.
Her songs were influenced by laptop music, rap music, opera and metal music.
Using any equipment such as steelpan, marimba, synthesizer and pad, to create her own sound.
She has joined D.A.N’s live concert as a support as well as composed music within a film, arranged music and produced audio source in parallel with her own solo work.
She had formed a band “Onino-Migiude”, and did a gig in FUJI ROCK FESTIVAL ROOKIE STAGE in 2013, but in the same year they broke up. Also she has taken part in live concert and recording of Shuta Hasunuma, Shugo Tokumaru, Miu Sakamoto, Ackky, Hiroshi Suzuki and Daniel Kwon.
Having Toshihiko Kasai as mix and seiho as mastering, she has released her first solo album from 2.5D PRODUCTION in May 2016.
