「正しい道」がいつも正しいとは限らず、クレイジーな子供のようにちょっと外れた道を歩むのも悪くない。
７月６日、Tokyo FEVERライブハウスでそんな大人のそんな遠く忘れ去られた感情を呼び覚ますかのような音楽を鳴り響かせたノルウェー出身のインディーポップバンド。
その名もKid Astray。2010年にノルウェーの音楽高校で結成された男女６人のバンドで2015年にはWombatsと共にヨーロッパツアーに参加し今回の日本ツアーが初の来日となった。今後期待が高まるアーティストにWoolyは先がけて取材を行った。
日本とノルウェーでライブでの感覚や感じ方の違いはありますか？
「日本人は自然と体がリズムに乗るね！ノルウェーでは僕たちが躍らせなくてはいけないけど日本の人たちはもう踊りたい！っていう欲のせいかアップビートで楽しいよ！」
去年イギリスのバンドWombatsとヨーロッパツアーをしたとのことですが、日本にきたきっかけは？
「そうだね…どちらかというと日本が僕らを選んだの方が正しいかな。」
「日本のファンからソーシャルメディアを通じて反響が大きかったり、インスタグラムなんかで私たちの曲をカバーしてくれてたりもしたの。熱心なファンが多いと感じたわ。」
曲がとてもキャッチーでボーカル同士声がマッチしていますね！どのようにして曲を作られますか？
「基本的にBenjaminが机に座って何時間もかけて曲を作るんだ。彼がToplineing、Choreds, と全体的なプロダクションをした後に僕たちも加わってメロディーラインとか歌詞を決めて行ったりするんだ。」
曲はもちろんなんですけどバンド名もとてもユニークですね！なぜKid Astrayという名にしたんですか？
「最初はそもそもどういう意味かわからなかったよ。当時名前が必要で、丁度聴いていた曲にAstrayという言葉が出てきたからそこからピックした感じかな。でもいい名前だと思ってる。響きもかっこいいしね。残念ながら僕たちのバンドの名前の由来は特別な物語があるわけじゃないんだ。」
「”Kid Astray”ってツイッターで調べたりもするといろんなことが書かれていて面白いよ。日本語で書かれてあることも通訳とかに頼んで読んでたりもするんだ。たまにgoogle translateとかも使うんだけどあれはダメだね。余計にわからなくなって困っちゃうよ。（笑）」
最後に、日本を始めとしたアジア進出などは今後考えていますか？
「もちろん！今回は日本だったけど日本だけで終わる理由はないしね！今回は日本ツアーをさせてもらったけどアジアの国にも行きたいかな！」
自分が好きなことが例え道外れなことでも気にする必要はない。彼らを見ていると大切さを学べる気がする。今年の日本ツアーは終わってしまったものの来年日本にまた来ることを心待ちに待つファンは大勢いることだろう。
Kid Astray
2010年にノルウェー、オソロで高校時代からお互い知っていた６人のメンバー（ベンジャミン、エリザベス、アレックス、エヴェン、ジェイコブ、ハクン）によって結成された。
最初に作った「The Mess」は多くのフェスティバルでの活躍の機会を与えただけではなく、Band of The Week on radio station NRK Urørtで勝ったのである。そんなバンドは2015年の夏に「Home Before the Dark」をインターナショナルリリースした。

It isn’t always correct to go the “right path” and perhaps it isn’t too bad to go off road like a crazy kid. July 6th, in Tokyo FEVER live house, such long forgotten feeling has been recalled by the music played by Norwegian indie pop band named Kid Astray. Having to form in 2010 at music high school in Norway, the band has been on a Europe tour with a British band Wombats and was their first time to do a live tour in Japan. With increasing attention, we were able to have an interview beforehand.
Do you feel any difference between doing a live in Norway and in Japan?
“Japanese people are more likely to dance to the rhythm than people in Norway. In Norway, we have to make them dance but here people have the desire of wanting to dance, which creates up-beat”
I heard that you have done a Europe tour with the British band Wombats, what triggered you in to coming to Japan?
“Well, its more like Japan chose us really.”
“We felt there were many dedicated fans in Japan, which was visible through social media and Instagram!”
The song is very catchy and the vocals really match the tone of voice. What are the processes when creating a song?
“Most of the time, Benjamin sits on the table for hours and hours making a song. He
makes the Toplineing Chords and the overall production, than we join him for the melody line and lyrics.”
Songs are very unique, but the band name “Kid Astray” is so peculiar in a good way. Why did you name the band “Kid Astray”?
“We don’t have any magical story behind our band name. We first didn’t even know the meaning of the word. We needed a name at that time, and the song we hear just seemed to had the word astray so we picked it up from there. But I think it’s a good name. It sounds cool as well.”
“Its funny when you search “Kid Astray” on twitter. There are many funny tweets! We ask people to translate the tweets written in Japanese as well. Well we try using Google Translator but it just makes it even more confusing.”
Lastly, are you thinking of moving out to the Asian countries?
“Of course! why not? We have no reason to top ourselves in Japan! Although this tour was only in Japan, we hope to go to other Asian countries in the near future!”
By listening to these vicious young artist, we can certainly learn the fact that we have no need to worry about if what we feel passionate about is off road. Japan tour 2016 has finished, but there must be many people looking forward to the next years live tour in Japan.
Kid Astray
The early incarnation of Kid Astray first formed in Oslo back in 2010, with the six members of the band (Benjamin, Elizabeth, Alex, Even, Jakob and Håkon) meeting in high school. The song they created, ‘The Mess’, not only earned them a place on the festival bill but it also won them Band of The Week on radio station NRK Urørt (or NRK Untouched), which led to even more regular radio play.
